The State of Somaliland is an independent and sovereign de jure State. Its sovereignty derives from its internationally recognized independence of 26 June 1960 and was never lawfully extinguished. There was never legally binding union between the State of Somaliland and Somalia, and no third successor state was ever lawfully created. Consequently, Somaliland did not secede from Somalia but lawfully resumed the exercise of its sovereign authority. Accordingly, any claim by Somalia over the territory, people, or institutions of the State of Somaliland is null and void, without legal basis or effect under international law. Such claims are purely declaratory and cannot override Somaliland’s established sovereignty, effective governance, and uninterrupted exercise of self-rule. The Republic of Somaliland continues to exist and function as a peaceful, stable, and responsible member of the international community in accordance with the principles of international law.
