And how many HW3 cars have they updated in over a year since then? About 0. I don't think they ever planned to, it would be too expensive but it briefly shut people up. Lately they have been saying they can make HW3 cars run a version of FSD 14 by compressing data in memory and other optimizations. I think this scheme will go something like this... 'we put a version of V14 (supervised) on HW3, we never said back then it would be unsupervised, therefore our promise was kept.'

@TeslaJoy In the Tesla earnings call in Jan 2025 Elon noted that they would upgrade the HW3 computers for those who bought the FSD package, so it seems like that covers at least a few of you early adopters? The question and answer start at 43:59 in the link x.com/i/broadcasts/1…

@Michael_L_Rauch @Tesla The Model Y and 3 are more like transportation appliances. But there is a certain beauty in their efficient design. In terms of energy consumed, inherent reliability, and fun to drive. If I could only get rid of that sunroof on the Premium trim it would be perfect.

The @Tesla Model Y may be a victim of its own success. The more people I talk to say it’s a grea cart, but don’t want one because there are so many of them & they see it as boring. It’s sadly becoming a generic car to a lot of folks without much passion. 🚙

I remember having to take the car keys away from my Dad. It was the end of his independence, but the reality was he was a risk to himself and others on the road due to his age and worsening dementia. Now I can see that same future coming for me too. So I certainly do see the value in a car that can safely and legally drive me or my wife where we need to go when we are less able. It means more years of independence. I have a HW3 car, and I realize this is just not going to be that car. I'm not even convince AI4 will get the job done. But I can see a more likely path that an AI5 based car would have a better chance, and I'd expect it would add a more interactive speech-based interface between the passengers and the car. Tesla has a certain amount of cultural optimism. That is not a bad thing, but it also means they don't always achieve what they believe they can. There are many examples of this. When I bought my Model 3 the public statements at the time were that this car has all the hardware it needed for FSD, which at the time was interpreted to mean unsupervised. But the reality has turned out to be otherwise. So I no longer believe future promises of Tesla, I only believe current capabilities and that is my advice to others. I'm certainly not going to put my money on promises. I'm waiting until AI5 to buy a new Tesla since I feel that is the most likely to produce a car with capabilities I need. I'm also hopeful by this time Tesla will make good on V2H powershare in their cars. That is something else they have not made good on but I have Tesla solar and live in a hurricane area and want this capability.

Another first time @Tesla purchase, this time by my friends Bob & Joyce today … a 2022 Model 3 from the San Antonio Tesla sales center. FSD (self-driving) was a major factor but they could not afford a brand new car so this was a great option. The self-driving capabilities even a HW3 Tesla offers gives people who are interested in extending the time of maintaining independence a great option and a good entry value into the future of autonomy! Really excited for them! 😎👍

@Tesla By the very definition of 'Supervised' it is not freedom. Drivers are required to take over at any time. Is Tesla officially telling drivers that they don't need to supervise FSD Supervised? What exactly are we supposed to take from this statement??

People should only buy a Tesla for what it has proven it can do, not for a promise of a future capability. V14 and AI4 have made a lot of progress, but even Tesla says it is Supervised. You may trust your ability to intervene when needed, but I guarantee your father who doesn't seem to trust his own driving for 3 years, does not have your driving skills. When Tesla sells a car with Unsupervised FSD, and the related liability issues have all been worked out, then we can put our elderly, and children and others with poor or non-existent driving abilities in these cars and send them on their way. But that is not a capability today with any Tesla.... not according to me but according to Tesla.

My dad hasn’t driven a car in 3 years. My benchmark for when Tesla FSD has truly arrived, is if I would feel safe with it driving my father around. FSD 14.2 clears that benchmark. He now has the potential to travel to visit his grandkids or visit a grocery store, on his own. Safely. Now if we can just have the option to automatically park in the handicap spot, it would be absolutely perfect for him.

As the driver you can't see out of the glass roof. In the summer the heat through the roof on the top of your head here in Texas is unbearable. You cannot touch the underside of the roof with skin for more than a few seconds. Tinting was not enough. I also had to put in a screen. It is the biggest 'feature' I wish I could delete from my 2022 Model 3. It is not a feature, it is a liability I've spent hundreds of dollars to tolerate.

I don't take anything that Elon has said about this Terafab or AI compute in space literally. I don't think anyone else should either. A literal 1 Terawatt of compute is not even possible to power. The entire power output of the US is about half a Terawatt. Ok, we'll launch them into space, no problem. Well, the most powerful bus in production today generates 30Kw and weighs 5,000-6,000 kg. It would take 33.3M of those busses to put that into space. Over 1.3 million starship launches. Even this not yet invented 100Kw bus would take 10M satellites. it is just science fiction. The cost of all this would be astronomical. Generating a TW with nuclear power would take over 1,000 nuclear power plants at a cost of trillions of dollars. Only two of Elon's companies are profitable right now and they make no where near 1 trillion dollars. If he really wants to build literally 1TW of compute he should start designing and building nuclear power plants. He will need more than 1,000. No one else is going to. Instead it is much more realistic to invest in new AI chip technologies to greatly increase efficiency. This has been a constant trend in microchips for decades. If they build a chip foundry it is not going to be to make literally 1TW of chips, there is no market for that because there is not enough power to run them. Instead they should and probably will focus on new chip technologies to make the same compute power use 10% or less of that 1 TW. Not that they will literally produce 1TW of chips. It is an expression, I don't take it literally.

This would roughly be the scale of the Tesla/SpaceX TERAFAB compared to Tesla’s Giga Texas factory, which is already one of the largest buildings in the world. We are talking about an unprecedented amount of scale.

I’m guessing a few reasons. First it probably just doesn’t make a business case. To integrate FSD to a new car is not trivial. It is not just the sensors and computer and screen, it is FSD development work to tune it to the car. How long did it take Tesla to role out FSD for their own Cybertruck. Then after all that investment the sell 50,000 cars with the hardware. At a 12% take rate that is 6,000 cars using FSD? I don’t think the numbers add up. Second it makes that company dependent on Elon Musk and he can turn on a dime and take his toys away for whatever reason. Can rival car companies depend on such as agreement? Third a lot of ‘not invented here’ attitude. Forth they probably realize they can satisfy their customers needs without FSD at a much lower cost.

@DavidMoss Specs that the vast majority of people don’t need at a cost the vast majority of people can’t afford. Sure they will sell a handful of them. In the meantime they could have put that R&D money into a true three row SUV that many people need.

@SawyerMerritt @Chansoo This is why I wish model Y premium had front bench seat. The standard Y has open console design which they need to bring to Premium trim. 'Tesla enthusiasts' is a dying breed. Tesla enthusiasts were the engine that sold overpriced cars and generated the revenue that made everything else possible, and their lost will slowly wind that down. Every brand has their fans. Tesla's fan were the most rabid and loyal, they are clearly in decline.

There’s two types of Tesla people. Tesla investors who invest in Tesla stock and Tesla enthusiast who invest in Tesla cars. Tesla deciding not to do FSD transfers will do nothing but benefit Tesla shareholders in the future. However, everybody who is a Tesla enthusiast is crying because Tesla won’t honor the transfer. In the end, it’s a business. It will only benefit you as a Tesla investor. A car is not an investment, the stock is.

Tesla's 'race to the bottom' accelerates. When I first began interest in Tesla a little over 4 years ago, and since buying my M3, I've noticed a sharp decline in the 'fanboy' crowd, shifting to more 'indifference' crowd, to a growing population of let's say 'never Tesla' crowd. It is not that people expect something for nothing, they just expect to be treated fairly. Whether it was all the broken promises and hype about FSD and thousands who paid for it and never saw it happen, to those like me who were told HW3 is all you need to run FSD (which is obviously not true), to removing Autopilot to force FSD subscriptions, to now 'bait and switch' on FSD transfers. It is just a string of shitty anti customer decisions that give people one more reason not to buy Tesla. These professional Tesla Influencers who just post whatever will hype the stock and make them money just add more fuel to the fire. When I think back even 4 short years ago the shifting is stunning and unexpected. It is increasingly not from leftist Musk haters, it is from Tesla customers.

after this, I will shut up. just please: put yourself in the shoes of a customer that: - bought Model S/X in 2022/2023 (~$140k for a Plaid), or even 3/Y at ~$60-75k - paid an additional $15k for FSD (12 ½ years worth of subscription at current pricing) - doesn't have access to latest FSD versions because HW3 (missed cutoff point by a few months) - can't justify upgrading to HW4 because they’re deeply underwater on their current car - see $15k FSD purchase option drop by nearly half, even though Tesla said it was only going to get more expensive - see a great deal on a Cybertruck with "Free FSD Transfer for loyal customers!" advertised right below the Order button. press "Order." - aren’t chronically online, so miss Tesla quietly changing the terms retroactively - show up (or are about to show up) for delivery in June only to be told “sorry, we’re not honoring that” - then went online to figure out what happened… and got hit with “stop wanting things for free!” these customers exist, and will never buy another Tesla again.
