@Socdem_Michael @PollTracker2024 It’s so moderate that the most progressive left wing candidate the state has seen in decades is up in polls by 3x the moderate candidate. Yeah I’m sure.

@PollTracker2024 Probably smart. Maine is still very much still a moderate state. Campaigning with Hasan probably wouldn’t be the best strategy in a place like Maine.

@MarathonDevTeam this is a great step towards a better schedule for sure, appreciate the swift change! Will the Subroutine 100% droprate change make it into this next Cryo window, or is that gonna take some more time to implement?

We’ve heard your feedback that having Ranked and Cryo Archive overlap can make it difficult to decide where to spend your time and hard-earned loot. Based on that, we’re updating their schedules so each has a clear, focused window. We're going to open Cryo Archive this week on Thursday, March 26 at 10AM PT and close it on Sunday, March 29 at 10AM PT. The next window for Ranked will start on Sunday, March 29th at 10AM PT and will run for four days - until Thursday, April 2nd at 10AM PT. Here's a quick look at the weekly schedule going forward, so you can mark your calendars: 🐛 Ranked: Sunday 10 AM PT ➡️ Thursday 10 AM PT 🐛 Cryo Archive: Thursday 10 AM PT ➡️ Sunday 10 AM PT We know that no schedule is perfect, but we're here to listen and learn! As we see how this lands, we'll continue to keep your feedback in mind as we make any future adjustments.

if my niche extraction shooter made around $55 million on launch, not factoring all extra revenue, and the player base is stabilizing and clearly very happy, I would consider that a success. The longer this game exists i'm sure the more people will buy and play it, bc Good Game
Rhys Elliott@superhys

Marathon has sold 1.2M copies across Steam, PS5, and Xbox (@alineaanalytics estimates). It hasn't exactly made the splash Sony and Bungie wanted, even if the game underneath the surface is a MASTERWORK of design. Looking at the split between Steam, PS5, and Xbox, Steam is clearly the main platform for Marathon, accounting for a little under 70% of the audience (800K copies sold). Meanwhile, PS5 takes about 19% (217K) and Xbox (including console, PC, and cloud) accounts for a bit over 11% or 133K. Marathon is technically a first-party Sony title, so seeing the home console struggle to break 20% of the volume is a notable data point for the ongoing platform-agnostic debate. PlayStation Studios online games will almost certainly continue being multiplatform (despite Sony reportedly pulling back on PC releases). One topic that came up in a lot of conversations at GDC this year was why Marathon hasn’t hit the same stratosphere as Arc Raiders. On paper, they’re both extraction shooters, and Marathon has the Bungie pedigree – the house that built the gold standard for gunplay in Halo and Destiny. My answer: Players understand the Arc Raiders loop within 30 minutes, while Marathon's UI acts as a massive filter, chewing up newcomers and spitting them out before they can experience the depth of Bungie’s signature gunplay and Marathon's awesome gameplay loop. The Steam copies sold during each game's respective Server Slam paint a picture there. Arc Raiders saw a massive 80% jump in copies sold during its three-day Server Slam. Marathon, meanwhile, saw a 49% increase in the four days following its Slam (Day -7 to -3). Despite the friction-heavy start, the data suggests that those who survived Marathon’s onboarding are loving life. We’ve been tracking cross-platform DAUs, and while there’s the expected post-launch leakage, many players are sticking with it. After peaking at 478K total DAUs on its first Saturday, Marathon has settled into a respectable rhythm, holding 345K DAUs as of yesterday and averaging 380K DAUs across the weekend. On Steam, Marathon’s average playtime has climbed to 27.8 hours, significantly outpacing the console averages on PS5 (16.5h) and Xbox (17.3h). Even more telling than the averages: 22% of the Steam audience has surged past the 50-hour mark, and nearly 7% have already logged over 100 hours. PlayStation and Bungie are at a crossroads here. They can: 1. Double down on Marathon with a long-term Rainbow Six Siege- or No Man’s Sky-style recovery plan, which is something I heard @ChrisRGun smartly mention last week on Sacred Symbols. While this could be a sunk-cost fallacy in action, it could eventually yield the audience the game’s mechanical depth deserves. 2. Shift focus toward the inevitable Destiny 3 or another project, mitigating the escalating opportunity cost and cutting their losses, so to speak. Doing both is an expensive proposition, given the high overhead and burn rate of operating out of Bellevue, Washington. With Sony recently demonstrating a lower threshold for underperforming studios and projects, the margin for error has vanished. Whatever happens, the next six months will determine whether Marathon becomes a cornerstone of Sony’s live-service portfolio or a cautionary tale of vision exceeding accessibility. I’m hoping it’s the former, because Marathon fucking rocks. Big analysis on the free Substack, with lots more data and thoughts (link in bio)

@LowmanLegend I'm on an undeserved high-horse here but I feel like Bungie only listened to people who were incapable of knowing what they wanted because they can't comprehend consequences. "This is too hard to get I want it!!" w/o realizing how that'd kill pursuit. Actual 9-year-old mentality

Thinking about the DCV era of destiny is genuinely just hilarious in retrospect, they were seriously going insane at that studio. The year and a half period from and after was the peak “accessibility era” for them when they turned an already pretty easy game into baby’s first looter shooter. Removing things like hotswapping and two Icarus dashes for the reason of “it’s too hard for people to play with.” Just insane. My favorite though was the removal of pinnacle weapons. They say it was because of power creep but it really wasn’t, evidence by the fact that they’re mostly all back in the game right now. It was because people whined and complained they couldn’t get them so they had to go, then we get “ritual weapons” as a replacement which were mid at best and were extremely easy to get. Just unbelievable how they just neutered every single grind that gave the game identity for the audience barely playing the game, I don’t even want to call them casuals because casual Destiny players will typically still try to interact with the games flagstone systems (or at least they did). I mean what meaningful grind has there been in the past 6 years? The only one that was actually enjoyable I can think of was onslaught during ITL. Every thing else is has been some meaningless thing like power level grinding or bounties every season. Just no aspirational content anymore

Wild guess? Between missed goals, and the current stat of D2's playerbase, on top of Marathon not failing but not being as big as Sony apparently expected. They're probably waiting to see what Sony does. If Sony lays everyone off because missed goals, Sony keeps their money.

@Gothalion D1 was so great because way had consistent game directors and leaders involved in development from launch to Rise of Iron. They weren’t hiring outside talent or people that were uninvolved even when leadership swapped. The vision was more or less the same.

Managed to do the final MIDA priority contract today where you go all across Outpost, lock yourself in rooms with UESC enemies while alarms blast, then you have to win all three wings of Pinwheel AND hold the Command Wing against waves of bots for 3 minutes straight. And as a personal challenge I did it solo and on a free Overrun kit. That felt DANG good.

@glorpinity Bag revives are easily countered. Just empty their inventory or hide any weapons and heals in their bag they could use against you. If they get revived, they are now at a significant disadvantage and not a threat.

self res and bag revives are really toxic coming from tarkov. it feels like there is truly no way to win a fight by playing better with worse gear. In tarkov if you hit a few lucky shots you can hit the jackpot in M if you have worse gear you just auto lose 99% of the time
Invicta_@Invicta_D2

Self revives seriously deserve to be limited in some way, either by being restricted to one per person or being significantly rarer/more expensive. Nobody should be self rezzing 4 times in a single fight, and yet in Cryo it’s expected for teams to have several per person.

@DSR_Joker @TTJamesG I don’t know if there’s any evidence of that. Everything in Marathon was designed against mass appeal and more towards filling a niche in a relatively new market. You don’t develop this type of game expecting it to challenge different genres. This was never a Destiny replacement

100% I'll say again, Marathon is a technically good game, a great game even, I've never said its bad. But its niche, and that's fine when it's the side hustle, not the flag ship.
daused1989@daused1989

@DSR_Joker Bungie should have done a d3 first then with the community satisfied, then made marathon as a sweaty PvP off shoot, that way the destiny fans would have been onboard to help support both. At least I would have.

@0kElysyum @Gothalion If I’m a gamedev, if I had to pick between a continuous downturn of 7 years and a continuous downturn of 7 months, I’d pick the former. D2 kept a steady playerbase for years which is something most games can’t say.

A game for everyone is a game for no one. I’ll be curious how bungies “get good or get fucked” approach pans out. Frankly I like it. Specific niche experiences are always more rich/robust. Shifting the window for limited time modes regularly would be a strong move. Curious to see how the playerbase shifts in size over time. As it currently stands, I have VERY LITTLE opportunity to play Cryo archive and that’s just how it is. Looks sick tho
Riloe@RiloeGaming

It's really crazy that Bungie could have made an approachable, mainstream compatible, bog-standard extraction shooter, and instead decided to make one of the most brutal, highest skill ceiling, creatively designed multiplayer experiences of all time

@DSR_Joker @JsMaster11 There are also some unique “exotic” inspired weapons that only spawn in some of the vaults that you can flex as well. I do agree that should improve their cosmetics. The defense of Marathon since the Alpha is that Cryo will revolutionize the game, and that we can't judge it before then. Now we have a bit of content only a small % can play, in a small window of time. So how exactly does this make the game better for everyone playing?
Jonathan (Leo)@LChurch814

@DSR_Joker Not everything should be made with solo play in mind. If that were the case, we wouldn’t have raids.

@DSR_Joker @JsMaster11 I can understand that but I feel where Bungie tries to bridge the gap here is by tying aspiration to in game achievements rather than exclusively loot. If they keep making experiences like Cryo, there will be more of a point to engaging with 3 month resets.

@DSR_Joker @JsMaster11 We’ve seen how bad having no reset would be for the game. Arc Raiders has optional resets and loot is essentially pointless as a result with players having good gear all the time. The long term goal for Marathon is aspirational endgame content with cosmetics you can flex.

@JsMaster11 I'm not saying that's bad. In my mind, for me, the whole thing fell apart with the reset, I don't mind losing loot, that's whatever easy come easy go. But I can't care if there's no long-term goal. Problem is I agree with the idea of the reset too.
