@jimbo38 Confirmed on the school web site stjohnscs.com/news/?pid=3&ni… desperately saddened by this news. I met Colm through the work he was leading his students on research into the Gravesend area War Memorials. 8 substantial volumes produced. A good friend.

A infamous day at The Royal Military Academy, when Goose led the Army horses a mile across camp in The Great Escape. Spare a thought for Falkland at the back. Close to retirement after a celebrated career carrying royalty, he did not feel the need to ‘do some phys’. #horses

@Truluck_Wilts We had a car take us there from Lisbon. The driver couldn’t quite understand why until we got there. His reaction was one of amazement and he planned to visit it again with his family. Had lunch in bar/restaurant in the village which surprised the locals. Came back via Elvas.

The magnificent Roman bridge over the River Tagus at Alcantara Spain. Built by Emperor Trajan in105 AD and still carrying heavy traffic two thousand years later.

@MrPitbull07 Having three computers in the house when these calls were prevalent I would ask “Which one?” which usually floored them.

I had a phone conversation today with a very nice young chap from Pakistan. This is how it went: "Hello sir, how are you today?" "I'm very well, thank you for asking. And how are you? And, more to the point, WHO are you?" "Sir, my name is Sanjit, and I'm calling you from Microsoft". "Microsoft, eh? Is that a city in Pakistan? How's the weather there today?" " No, sir - MICROSOFT, the computer company. I'm calling to tell you that we have found a problem with your computer and -" "REALLY?? Well, that's quite concerning......" "Yes sir, it can become very serious indeed, but thankfully I will be able to fix it for you. Now, if you -" "No, I meant it's very concerning because you see I don't HAVE a computer". "You don't?" "I don't". "Ahh, it must be a problem on your laptop sir -" "Don't have one". "Ipad?" "Nope". "Tablet?" "Nope, I have none of those things. As a matter of fact, I don't even have a telephone". After a few seconds of silence he said "Ah, sir, you are lying to me now!" I said "Well, you started it!!" and put the phone down.🤣 ~Rudes on a roll

Observe @DavQuinn: what the High School describes as a decision to cancel "at a late stage" was made 6 months after I accepted the invitation, after my flights had been booked, after my address had been prepared, after the programme had been printed. It was delivered to me, without explanation, at 2218, thirteen hours before I was due to fly. It was shockingly, brutally discourteous. And the description is manifestly disingenuous. Why?
David Quinn@DavQuinn

I contacted High School in Dublin to ask why they cancelled a talk by Oxford professor @NigelBiggar on free speech at the last minute. Here is their answer, which to me is a non-answer. @Casey5122dark @FreeSpeechIre @timcrowley_

@almurray @James1940 @WeHaveWaysPod My late father in law who served in the RN boy and man oft expressed the view that the Fleet Air Arm flew when even seagulls were grounded. It seems he was correct.

@Jimmyocx3 @BritishArmy Probably a consequence of dealing with it himself instead of on the record the next morning. Certainly often done that way back in the 60s.

@ProfKarolSikora That’s OK until you are elderly and your passport has expired and you have had to surrender your driving licence. You then have no legitimate means of proving your identity with to bank, solicitor or such like. For the moment I will renew my passport.

@wtbattlefields @WeHaveWaysPod Phil, no idea, may not even have known since the painting wasn’t done until 1969. Kit was 60 then but he was possibly still in touch with Montgomery. Good piece by him in ‘Monty at close quarters’ ed: by John Howarth with other valuable insights into Monty.

Interesting talk about a painting of the German Surrender at Luneberg Heath, May 1945 by Terence Cuneo - commissioned by Montgomery of Alamein @WeHaveWaysPod Fest. I’m not sure who the officer is on the right hand side of the photo or why he was omitted from the painting.

@ypreswoman @DBGMilitaria It would have been GWR if there were any. Some of the family lived in Little Somerford and joined the GWR. Many thanks for checking for me.
