@niccruzpatane “• The first private company to transport astronauts to orbit, returning America's ability to fly astronauts to and from the International Space Station (2020)” And still the only private company to transport them back.

SpaceX is such a bad ass company. In their IPO filing, they wrote this: • The first private company to develop and launch a liquid-fuel rocket to reach orbit (2008) • The first private company to successfully dock a private spacecraft with the International Space Station (2012) • The first to successfully propulsively land (2015) and refly orbital-class rocket boosters (2017) • The first to begin deploying a large-scale LEO broadband satellite constellation (2019); • The first private company to transport astronauts to orbit, returning America's ability to fly astronauts to and from the International Space Station (2020) • The first to manufacture consumer-grade phased-array user terminals at scale (2022); The first to deploy a large-scale LEO satellite-to-mobile constellation (2025) • The first to build a gigawatt-scale Al training cluster and largest coherent supercomputer (2026) • The first gigawatt-scale Megapack battery installation (2026); and • The only company capable of building orbital AI compute at scale. BOOM.

@mrgalerien @KiltCat Agreed, on both counts. The makers of For All Mankind have stated as much. It’s nice though that there is a nod to For All Mankind in season six of The Expanse.

Yes, choose. I’m talking specifically about those that choose that path for reasons such as feeling the world is too terrible to have children or would just prefer not to or any one of the myriad reasons given. Which is to say, I’m responding to the OP. Note that, in contrast to the OP the people that I feel sorry for are those that would like to have children but can’t. Those that choose it don’t really deserve sympathy.

Why the asteroid belt beats Mars for human expansion, from first principles: 1/ Accessibility. 100% of the belt's mass is reachable with low delta-v. To match the belt's mass on Mars, you'd have to strip-mine the entire planet to 9+ km depth. Deepest mine on Earth: 3.9 km. 2/ Gravity well. From the belt you can reach anywhere in the solar system cheaply. Mars makes you climb out of a well every time you want to leave. 3/ Atmosphere is a non-feature. Mars's atmosphere is too thin to breathe or shield you—you still need pressurized habitats. Difference between a Mars hab and a belt hab is fractions of a psi. Trivial. 4/ Gravity requirements are unknown. We don't know the minimum g humans need to thrive and reproduce. The belt offers any value from 0 to 1g via rotation. If the answer is >1/3 g, Mars is permanently disqualified. 5/ Mobility. A belt habitat can move to new resources. A Mars base is stuck where you built it. Mars is a romantic destination. The belt is an economic one.

It appears what saved them was the jet’s fly-by-wire doing its best to keep the aircraft flying and upright. Amazing.

@Combat_learjet There’s a little hole in the front of the wing. Just tape over it, you’ll be fine. Either that, or it’s the cops trying to pull you over.
