SHE WARNED THE NHS WATCHDOG WAS BROKEN Kay Sheldon was a board member at the Care Quality Commission (CQC) the body supposed to keep NHS patients safe. This was 2011, the height of the Mid Staffordshire hospital scandal, where hundreds of patients died through neglect. She did what you're meant to do. She raised concerns. Bullying in the organisation. Dysfunctional leadership. A regulator that wasn't actually regulating. The CQC chair Jo Williams wrote to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley asking him to use his powers to remove Sheldon from the board on the very day Sheldon gave critical evidence to the public inquiry into Mid Staffordshire. The Sunday Times reported that Lansley threatened to fire her "despite specific laws to protect whistleblowers." Lansley denied it. He says he chose not to dismiss her. Sheldon says she received a letter in March confirming the removal request had been made. You can decide who you believe. Then it got worse. The outgoing CQC chief appeared before the Commons health committee and publicly disclosed highly personal allegations about Sheldon's mental health. MPs intervened. The chair was forced to withdraw the claims and apologise. Read that again. The head of a health regulator went to Parliament and tried to discredit a whistleblower using her mental health. In public. In front of cameras. Sheldon had written back to Lansley: "It seems to me that it would be fundamentally unfair to effectively 'sack' the person raising serious, valid concerns." She was right. Nobody who mattered seemed to care. The Mid Staffordshire scandal killed people. Kay Sheldon tried to make the regulator take it seriously. The regulator's response was to try and get rid of her. This is what whistleblowing in the NHS looks like. Not a hotline and a thank you note. A target on your back. Now Peter Murrell pled guilty, I can tell you without contempt of court Alex Salmond told me this: when Murrell ran Alex' office in NE Scotland 20+ years ago, Murrell stole a sum from party funds. Alex replaced it with his own money and protected Murrell who had problems. I told Alex his kindness was admirable and covering for Murrell I understood, but continuing to employ him was nuts. I do not doubt Alex was telling me the truth but obviously I can offer no proof. If memory serves it was £500 - a substantial sum at the time.
