I think politicians often get housing wrong because they only talk about half the problem. Yes, we need more homes. The housing shortage has made it harder for younger people to buy their first property and pushed rents higher than they should be. If we’re serious about giving the next generation the opportunities previous generations enjoyed, we need to build more homes. But we also need to build better homes. Too much modern development lacks the character, quality and sense of place that made many of our communities attractive in the first place. We shouldn’t have to choose between quantity and quality. Look around places like Broughty Ferry and you’ll see streets that were built with ambition. Homes designed to last. Communities that still look attractive decades later. That should be our standard. I want Arbroath and Broughty Ferry to be places where more people choose to live, invest and raise a family. Places that attract talent, create opportunity and grow more prosperous over time. That requires more housing. But it also requires higher expectations. We should be building homes that enhance our communities, not simply add to them. Because housing is about more than numbers. It’s about the kind of places we leave behind for the next generation.
