2/4🌐The history of NATO's military pipeline system dates back to the 1950s, when a network of over 10,000 kilometers was built to ensure rapid fuel supplies for allied armies in the event of a Soviet invasion. Known as the NATO Pipeline System (NPS), the system includes not only pipelines but also extensive underground storage facilities and fuel stations located mainly in Western and Central Europe. After the end of the Cold War, expansion eastward seemed less urgent, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 changed everything. Poland and other eastern members of the alliance have long pushed for an expansion of the network, as the existing infrastructure is not sufficient to quickly move large amounts of fuel to high-risk areas. As early as March 2026, the Supreme Allied Commander, NATO Logistics Command, Lieutenant General Kai Rohrschneider, called for the pipeline to be extended hundreds of kilometers eastward to ensure sufficient supplies for a possible conflict with Russia. The Turkish proposal fits neatly into this strategy and represents a concrete solution that could be approved as early as the NATO summit in Ankara in July 2026, where Turkey is hosting alliance leaders.
