Celebrating Davidson Ndyabahika's Contribution to MakSPH For six years, @dndyaba was the voice behind @Makerere University School Public Health's public face, translating complex research into narratives that reached policymakers, partners, and the public, building the School's visibility across Uganda and beyond, and doing all of it with professionalism, creativity, integrity, and unwavering commitment. His humility, reliability, and the positive energy he brought to our community have left a mark that will endure well beyond his time here. MakSPH is better for the six years you gave it, Davidson. Please join the School in wishing him every success in his next chapter. We are grateful he chose to spend this one with us.

Today, while travelling from Arua to Kampala aboard a YY bus registration UAZ 701X, the situation became unbearable upon reaching Nebbi. The bus crew continued adding passengers into the corridors, while others boarded carrying chickens and ducks, making it difficult for passengers to even breathe comfortably. I decided to call the Police Traffic Emergency number 0800199099. By the time we reached Pakwach Bridge, traffic officers had already impounded the bus, issued the driver an EPS ticket for excess passengers, and removed the overcrowding. Yes, we have lost some time on the journey, but it is far better to arrive late than to risk lives by travelling in unsafe conditions, exhausted and unwell. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let us value life over recklessness. @M_Kananura @mkituuma @PoliceUg

A bus belonging to Gulu Secondary School carrying students to Jinja for a tour has been involved in a road crash @Kigumba at about @544am. According to reports, the crash occurred when the bus driver attempted to overtake another vehicle & collided head-on with a Fuso truck traveling in the opposite direction. The bus conductor died on the spot, while @17 students sustained injuries. Of these, @2 were critically injured, while @15 sustained minor injuries. The injured students are currently admitted @Kiryandongo Hospital for treatment. #AvoidCarelessOvertaking

MakSPH Advances Global Action on Drowning Prevention through WHO Reports and Strategy Two key global reports on drowning prevention, to which @Makerere University School of Public Health has contributed through the @TRIADUnit, are now available. Together, they strengthen the evidence base and strategic direction for addressing drowning as a major, yet preventable, public health challenge. The Global Strategy for Drowning Prevention (2025–2035) sets an ambitious target to reduce drowning deaths by 35% by 2035. It outlines a coordinated, multisectoral framework anchored on six strategic pillars, including governance, data systems, advocacy, and research, alongside ten priority interventions such as improved supervision, water safety skills, rescue capacity, and enforcement of safety regulations. Complementing this, the Global Status Report on Drowning Prevention 2024, published by the World Health Organisation, provides the first comprehensive global assessment of drowning. It estimates over 300,000 deaths annually, with the greatest burden in low- and middle-income countries, and highlights critical gaps in policy, data systems, and implementation. MakSPH’s role as a member of the Global Alliance for Drowning Prevention reflects its contribution to advancing research, policy engagement, and capacity strengthening in injury prevention. Through its Centre, the School continues to support the translation of global frameworks into context-specific action.
