AFRICA'S JUNIOR MINERS & THE CHALLENGE OF FINANCING MINERAL EXPLORATION #BotswanaMinerals milestone as detailed in the link interests me because it illustrates how entrepreneurs and policymakers in Africa and other emerging markets might lower barriers to entry into the mineral exploration business. A MEANS TO AN END Majors treat exploration as business development: the equivalent of R&D in pharmaceuticals or technology, funding work from internal sources to secure long-term production pipelines. A diversified portfolio of greenfield and brownfield projects across multiple geographies strengthens risk resilience. One common strategy is to acquire late-stage projects from juniors who lack either the appetite or the capital to develop them. MARKET ENTRY BARRIERS Access to finance remains the principal hurdle for junior explorers worldwide. Policymakers can facilitate capital market growth by creating an ecosystem of exploration-literate institutions, including legislation that mobilizes pension funds and fund managers who bridge private capital, stock markets and project sponsors. So far this is lacking in Africa.
