The interview question is a brilliant trap in disguise. Very quickly, my brain went to each flip being 50%, and 2 Heads is two 50%'s in a row -> 0.5 * 0.5 = 0.25 -> 4 flips... but that ain't it chief. That thought assumes one exact moment when you get 2 heads in a row.. What about the mess of flips to get to that moment? Every failed streak counts against your total, and getting Tails resets everything. You have to map out this mess using 'states'. Hence, let's do some magic. For handling the reality of messy flips: Let X = Expected total flips from a fresh start (0 heads) and Let Y = Expected extra flips needed when you already have 1 Heads reached State X (Fresh Start): > 50% Tails: No good, start over = 0.5(1+X) >> (Wasted 1 flip, and still have X flips to go) > 50% Heads: Progress, move to next state Y = 0.5(1+Y) >> (You used 1 flip, and now you have Y flips to go) Thus the equation for the starting State X becomes: X = 0.5(1+X) + 0.5(1+Y) X = 0.5 + 0.5X + 0.5 + 0.5Y : Make everything clean with multiply 2 to both sides 2X = 2(0.5+0.5) + 2(0.5X + 0.5Y) 2X = 2 + X + Y, clean it to have 1 variable in each side by subtracting X both sides: 2X-X = 2 + X - X + Y --> X = 2 + Y Now for the state that is reached when at least 1 Heads is flipped, awaiting the next Flip... we call this State Y: > 50% next flip is Heads: Yay, two-in-a-row heads moment = 0.5(1) > 50% next flip is Tails: rip, back to the start = 0.5(1+X) Hence we can represent Y = 0.5(1) + 0.5(1+X) -> Y = 1 + 0.5X And look at that, we have 2 unknowns w/ 2 equations :) (1) X = 2 + Y (2) Y = 1 + 0.5X Move the Y representation from (2) into (1) to get: X = 2 + (1+0.5X) X = 2 + 1 + 0.5X X = 3 + 0.5X ... subtract 0.5X both sides X - 0.5X = 3 + 0.5X - 0.5X 0.5X = 3 ... multi both sides by 2 2(0.5X) = 2(3) X = 6 Thus, the expected number of flips to getting 2 Head flips in a row is truly 6, after accounting for all the 'failed' first flips of both Tails and Streak Breakers.
