I use TimeformUS data for this. I also go into it in my new book, Betting on Horse$, as well. There is not a standard definition though. L – Leader: Needs the lead; almost always found on the front end. S – Speed: Fast early; comfortable on the lead or pressing it. EP – Tracker: The "Stalker"; sits just behind the leaders and pounces. PC – Midpack: Stays in the middle of the field; neither fast nor slow early. CL – Closer: Drops back early and relies on a big late run. PL – Plodder: One-paced; stays at the back and passes only tired horses.

In the 20-horse @KentuckyDerby field the importance of a good start is magnified. A poor break can leave a runner hopelessly out of their desired spot. Especially, horses with inside or outside posts. The table below provides some helpful info on how Derby runners typically break
