We are so back! SEASON 2 of Tech in the Cities is here. This season, titled When Every Company Is a Tech Company, explores a question that's becoming harder to ignore: in 2026, is every company a tech company? And if so, what does that mean for New York? For Episode 1, @WeberWest and @TeddySolomon11 join Tom Allon and Julie Samuels to discuss what lessons from history Silicon Valley can teach New York about what comes next. Awesome to see @juliepsamuels @TechNYC

@TechNYC President & CEO @juliepsamuels put it well in the @nytimes: "But when it comes to how to use the technology in practice, what works and what doesn't in business, they come here." Anthropic's expansion to a new Manhattan headquarters and plans to double its NYC workforce to 1,000 employees is the latest proof that New York has become the center of applied AI. Great news: @anthropic is leasing an entire 16-story building at 330 Hudson St. The company is doubling its workforce here to 1,000+ employees. NYC is rapidly emerging as one of the world's most important AI hubs. An important source of growth for our city in an otherwise challenging economy.

Tech:NYC’s #DecodedFutures recently celebrated a first-of-its-kind cohort: Funders. As AI expands nonprofit capacity and supercharges missions, so does it alter the grantmaking landscape. Over 8 weeks, we brought together funders and philanthropists looking to deepen their understanding of AI, create shared frameworks, strengthen their orgs and grantmaking, and learn alongside our technologist volunteers and one another. Thanks to @siegelendowment, @SloanFoundation, Altman Foundation, @EmCollective, @CNTR4growth, Overdeck Family Foundation, @robinhoodnyc Learning + Technology Fund, and @RockefellerFdn for helping shape the future of AI-informed philanthropy.

“Make no mistake, AI will be deployed in schools in some fashion in the years ahead. The challenge we have now is not whether or not to use AI, it is ensuring its use will be consistently understood and predictably applied across classrooms and communities.” In @amNewYork, @TechNYC President & CEO @juliepsamuels explains why New York should focus on responsible AI implementation in schools—not an outright moratorium. One in 14 new business owners last year identified as LGBTQ+, and the community has made a profound impact on the tech, business, and entrepreneurship industries. 🏳️‍🌈 🌈 According to a recent report: - LGBTQ+ founders are more likely than non-LGBTQ+ founders to cite the desire to have a positive community impact as a motivation for starting their business. - Over half of LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs use AI in regular operations, and a majority used the technology to help start their company. And, of course, NYC stands out: - New York City’s annual Pride March is this Sunday, June 28, and is one of the largest LGBTQ+ civil rights demonstrations in the world. - Just this past week, Tech:NYC joined the @NYSE alongside LGBT+ VC, Purpose, and Prism in hosting their third annual Pride Summit, featuring 150+ leaders from across tech, finance, and the arts. But we also know that the work to support entrepreneurs who identify as LGBTQ+ remains essential. That’s why this month, we’re thrilled to spotlight four LGBTQ+ founders in NYC who are challenging the status quo and building the future of their industries. For this edition of Companies to Watch, meet: 🗽 Tyler Herron, founder, Eclipse Scheduling 🗽 Michelle Parsons, founder, Lora 🗽 Bryan Alston, founder, MOST - Marketing Operating System of Tomorrow 🗽 Susannah Schoolman, founder, Tourlami Read our full feature ➡️ blog.technyc.org/news/companies…

Great conversations happen over lunch! 🍽️ Today, we were thrilled to welcome Council Member @CnDelarosa to the @TechNYC office for a policy roundtable. As Chair of the @NYCCouncil's Technology Committee, the council member joined us for a wide-ranging discussion on digital equity, AI in education, and the future of city tech policy. We also talked about how to expand AI capacity across the social sector — ensuring mission-based organizations have access to the tools, training, and networks they need to maximize their impact. It's an approach we've seen firsthand through Tech:NYC's #DecodedFutures initiative, which is helping nonprofits put AI to work to scale their impact and better serve their communities. Thanks to Council Member De La Rosa and everyone who joined us for such a thoughtful conversation. We’re looking forward to continuing to work together to ensure technology serves all New Yorkers.

💡 Josh @Machiz knows how to tell a good story. And as the Chief Marketing Officer at @lightspeedvp, he uses that skillset to help founders tell their story, from first fundraise to IPO. Lightspeed recently launched Lightwork, a weekly AI news show that Josh co-hosts with @clairejyz out of the firm’s new NYC studio. “That’s the model,” says Josh. “The firm as a megaphone, not just writing checks.” These days, venture capital firms have become much more than capital providers. They’ve become media companies. With this in mind, we caught up with Josh to discuss his career, how the job of building a VC firm’s brand has changed, his tech stack, how founders can tell a good story, and much more. One of many takeaways: The future of AI isn’t inevitable. Instead of asking, “What will happen to us because of AI?” we need to ask, “What values do we want to see in the world, and what must be true of AI to get them?” That shift gives all of us agency. Building an AI future that works for everyone requires nonprofits, philanthropy, government, the private sector, and the public all having a seat at the table. 2/3
