@McFranchisee Why not just move the dispensers behind the counter so that the employee hands you your drink and then do a “no free refills” policy. Simple and easy instead of this whole system.

I don’t eat at Steak ‘n Shake very often (their transparency and ownership have always been a little weird to me), but a new controversy I just read about is pretty silly. During remodels, they may add a QR code scanner for soft drink refills. Basically, you scan proof of purchase so people can’t just order water and then help themselves to unlimited soda. Some folks are now boycotting because they have to scan their receipt each time. I think it’s a smart move that helps keep people honest. The entitlement is wild, people are genuinely mad about scanning a code for a free refill? Go to almost any other country where free refills barely exist (if at all) and they’d be begging for this system. 😂🥤

@DavePKel @ClownWorld San Antonio spent millions in CDBG to demolish thousands of shotgun houses - not as ornamental as NOLA's - for Hemisfair Plaza 1960s and Westside barrios 70s-90s. A few shotgun houses on 25' lots have been conserved and purtied up like perfume on a pig. x.com/i/status/20788…

@TedCornwell @ClownWorld The news ones, yes. Those will be falling down within 10-20 years. However, for shotgun homes that are built with some intention, there are still thousands in southern cities which are occupied by working class people and retirees. Even some from the 1870s are still standing.

I know some people think these tiny homes are the future, but I honestly think it’s pathetic. I’ve seen backyard sheds that are bigger than this. Somewhere along the way we started convincing ourselves that paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for what looks like a storage unit is normal. Is this really the direction we want housing to go?

@ClownWorld Shotgun homes don't need to be hideous looking. Give it a normal roofline. Put the door on one side. Add a little flair to the windows and roofline. Put the parking and garbage pickup in an alley in the back. The builder from the video intentionally made them ugly.

At around 3:30 in the morning, a traffic stop was attempted on a white Chevy Camaro in Haines City. The driver was Hiram, and during a brief interaction with the deputy, Hiram felt it was necessary to mention that he just came from a lady-friend’s home where he…well…let’s just said he had a good time. So now he was wanting the deputy to give him a break. When Hiram realized he wasn’t going to get a break, he sped away from the traffic stop. Rather than pursing, the deputy got on the radio and told all of his cop buddies in the area about Hiram and his Camaro. A short time later, a Davenport PD officer found the Camaro in his city. Hiram got out of the Camaro and ran, leaving the car running. He also left one of his shoes behind. So he was literally fleeing on foot. One foot, and one shoe. PCSO deputies and even officers from Haines City responded to Davenport to look for Hiram. K9 Wit arrived on scene, and he was tasked with tracking Hiram. To do this, the poor dog had to take a whiff of the suspect’s abandoned shoe. The scent was strong with this one, and K9 Wit found Hiram two blocks away, lying on the ground, pretending to be a homeless person, comingling with garbage bags behind a business. Wit harangued Hiram using his outside voice. Hiram was arrested and taken to Grady Judd’s Bed & Breakfast. He was charged with Fleeing to Elude (because he fled to elude the popo), Cocaine Possession (because he had coke, and not the kind that looks like Pepsi), Driving While License Suspended/Revoked (the felony kind because he does it so often), possession of drug paraphernalia (for his coke container), resisting without violence (for popo defiance), and failure to appear (for declining the court’s invitation). Hiram, bless his heart (and you know what that means in the south), has now been welcomed at the Polk Pokey 38 times. He’s been a guest of the Florida State Prison system 6 times. Hiram’s hornswoggling might suggest an intellectual hebetude. #PCSO #PolkSheriff #HiramWasHavingAGoodNightUntilHeWasnt #HiramSharingTMIAndHopingHeWouldGetLuckyAndCatchABreak #NoLicenseAndTheresCokeInTheCar #WhatsAGuyToDo #FleeApparently #OutrunOneOfYourShoesEven #AtWitsEnd #HisNoseKnows #YouGotTheWrongGuy #ImHiramTheHomelessMan #HiramsCamaroAlsoGotArrested #ItWentToCarJail

@LeonSandoTXMN @HEB SNAP is actually an indirect farm subsidy meant to stimulate demand for ag products. That’s the reason it’s administered by the USDA. That fact gets lost in the rhetoric.

More than 100 of Governor Abbott’s buoys broke loose during deadly floods in Texas. Buoys with sharp razors are now causing damage to neighborhoods and have shut down a bridge that transports thousands of vehicles a day. Abbott’s “buoy border” was a reckless idea from the very start and border communities remain collateral damage.
Texas Tribune@TexasTribune

New: About 100 buoys that the federal government planned to install as anti-immigration deterrents near Eagle Pass drifted into the Rio Grande, prompting officials to close two key bridges with Mexico for about three hours, reopening them just after midnight Friday. bit.ly/4wMMFOj

Today's view on Texas submarkets where homebuilders make up more than 50% of for-sale inventory in some cases. Note the ring formation around DFW and Houston, and the parallel tracks running from Austin down to San Antonio - builders concentrated around the urban hubs and built outwards. Cutting asking prices is the last thing homebuilders want to do. Their usual playbook is rate buydowns and other backend incentives that leave the sticker price untouched. In TX, they are actively cutting.

This goes back to Rousseau. Child-centered education is a women-oriented education. No hierarchy, no true discipline. For boys, the teacher-centered education requires a discipline that will push for a discipline of the mind. It happens that Rousseau followed and extended the English Enlightenment. You can already perceive feminist trends in Locke and Smith. The whole goes back to the Reformation and Renaissance but also the French "Amour courtois" courtly love.

A plane in the United States was forced to land after the sound of the adhan was heard from a passenger's phone. A Southwest Airlines flight traveling from Tennessee to Florida was forced to make an emergency landing in Atlanta. Upon landing, a SWAT team boarded the aircraft and detained one of the passengers, accusing him of terrorism and posing a bomb threat. It was later revealed that the detained passenger was a Muslim. During the flight, his prayer-time app activated and played the adhan (the Islamic call to prayer). The crew reportedly interpreted the sound as a potential security threat, notified dispatchers, and decided to make an emergency landing.
