With New York City already facing a dire affordable housing shortage, Local Law 18 prevents rent stabilized apartments like these from being turned into illegal hotels.
This case is an example of the great work being done by NYC’s Office of Special Enforcement.

Amidst a dire housing crisis, taking homes off the market is unacceptable. This reporting is troubling — but I’m deeply grateful to OSE for bringing the investigation. nytimes.com/2026/02/07/nyr…

Our city’s families need affordable housing, not illegal vacation rentals.
Thank you to the Office of Special Enforcement for their vigilance in Upper Manhattan.

Despite spending millions of dollars on lobbying and campaigns, @Airbnb failed to gain support from more than just a handful of Council Members. Intro 948B's remarkable failure demonstrates what all New Yorkers know to be true: that our city is not for sale.

Yesterday, @NYCCouncil rejected Intro 948B, an Airbnb-backed bill that would have eliminated nearly all short-term rental regulations and jeopardized tens of thousands of permanent homes for New Yorkers. This victory was made possible by the broad coalition that stood with us.

Airbnb’s billions have nothing on the organizing power of @CUFFH, @KirstenJohnFoy, @tenantspacny, @chtenantunion, @InsideAirbnb, @LegalAidNYC, @MaketheRoadNY, @CSSNYorg, @nycCoRe, @Met_Council, @AstoriaTenants, @CarrollGardensA, @HousingConCoord, @HOPE_organizers, @IMPACCTBrooklyn, and more.

Thank you to the @NYCCouncil for rejecting Intro 948B, a bill that would have taken housing and job opportunities away from New Yorkers. Tenants, homeowners, and workers deserve real solutions on affordability, but converting homes into tourist rentals hurts everyone.

In Barcelona, 8% of corporate investors control 51% of the 10,000 Airbnb-licensed rentals.
The narrative still claims that this market helps families, but what it fosters is inequality.

Airbnb is pushing to turn homes into hotels ahead of the Olympics. I’m committed to protecting our housing and protecting our communities, and would like to thank @TenantsFirstNYC for their advocacy. x.com/TenantsFirstNY…

NYC is facing a housing crisis. Now, proposed legislation advanced by Airbnb would make it worse by turning our homes into hotels, driving up rents & gutting housing protections. Housing should be for us, not for generating windfall profits for Airbnb. Reject Airbnb & its bill.

Thank you to all of the brave council members who represent all corners and communities of our great city for standing up for millions of New Yorkers against #airbnBS. These bills would have allowed people who live anywhere else to use homes as tourist rentals here while splitting their time in other homes anywhere in the world they want to. @Airbnb should stop their campaign of lies and should be ashamed of lying to some of our most prominent leaders saying… “Ye shall not surely die”.
I am proud to stand with Attorney General Letitia James and Mayor-Elect Mamdani and hospitality workers, most of whom are women and people of color and renters, as well as the thousands of New Yorkers who stood against these predatory bills that would exacerbate our housing and affordability crisis.

Supporters of Bill 9 are celebrating tonight while opponents of the bill say they are fearful for what’s to come.

"Educate instead of enforce."
That's the approach our Office of Special Enforcement takes as they work to protect NYC's housing market from illegal short-term rentals.
It was a pleasure to talk w/@TweetBenMax about how New Yorkers can legally profit on sites like AirBnB.

Following the work of @TenantsNotTourists closely. I strongly support thoughtful conversations about regulating short-term rentals to protect housing for residents and promote growth of affordable homes. Housing policy should put people first 🏡
