I love the fact that you can just build little rocket engines in you back yard if you truly want to

@Mookafish @Truthful_ast The much more complicated part is the assorted factory for the payloads. When compared to mining hundreds of tonnes of regolith, refining it, and assembling it into satellites, the mass driver seems almost trivial

A mass driver is essentially a metal structure which you pass a current through to create an electromagnet. There is plenty of free matter on the moon, and Starship can easily haul whatever can't be locally resourced. Not to downplay how impressive it is to build one, but it is much more simple than basically anything else SpaceX has built. If SpaceX can get Starship working then it is more than capable of building something like this, I'm sure.

Unfortunately most people including space fans, have no understanding of building infrastructure on the Moon. A bunch of small construction vehicles sent by Starship can build a mass driver in just few short years. Humans suck at comprehending future scale and it’s worsened by how long and difficult it is to build things down here on Earth due to regulations but such things do not exist in space and are driven by companies who actually need to lay down the foundation. Everyone needs to sit down and binge watch ANTHROFUTURISM on YouTube! The 2030s will be a turning point in human history.

Most people really don't realize that in *our lifetimes* we will see factories, settlements, and giant electromagnetic railguns on the Moon

@Moonage @peterrhague Exactly! lunar mining will drastically increase wealth on Earth while decreasing the pollution and emissions from industries/manufacturing—while being cheaper too. I see no reason not to seed and terraform those other moons as well.

If you think, looking at Starship, that SpaceX have given up on Mars you literally don’t understand anything about spaceflight.
Listen to the Internet@scm0330

@icanhasgains Pulling the plug on Mars mission. Was never going to happen but they needed to come clean for the SpaceX IPO registration. Can’t lie like that when you want to go public.

@Moonage @peterrhague Why can’t we terraform? Some hydrogen bombs and a lot of methane should do the trick. Not to mention, that it doesn’t need to be easy, it needs to be a short term backup for life in case something happens to Earth

@TheFinalMachina @peterrhague We better build a better future right here for the time being. We can't terraform. We can't live on Mars. Nothing there is "easy". Long term we develop the technology to do the things necessary to find a planet that isn't a death trap. Mars will never be the future.

@Moonage @peterrhague So do we just roll over and let everyone suffer in poverty, illness, and eventually, death? So what if it’s near-impossible or a long time away, we should at least try to build a better future. We owe it to all those who have lived and died before us.

@Moonage @peterrhague The reason to go to mars to stay is twofold 1) A backup to earth should something happen that would cause mass extinction or not allow humans to explore space 2) it will be the trail run for terraforming. We can learn how to mold a dead world into one that’s safe for humans

@peterrhague Mars is an impossible destination. Not sure why Elon zoned in, other than NASA wanted it. It's bombarded by radiation because it has no magnetic field. Whatever atmosphere you pipe in, will just float into space. May as well look farther away.

@MobofJoggers @OwenSparks Tbf, it’s only a short term thing. Once we mine the moon, the need to LEO compute drops a good chunk. And once we start mining Mercury, the whole paradigm shifts drastically. This constellation is just to push humanity high enough on the Kardashev totem pole to do the others

@TheManxomeFoe90 @RyanTanaka You allow and encourage people to build and grow. You shift away from success meaning you have money and move into a future where success comes from doing what you love—whether that be terraforming, drawing, engineering, singing, etc. In this case, fulfillment is your wealth

In this world of you having everything you want. How do you find fulfillment in life? How do you feel when you’re laying on your death bed considering the life you have lived? If you get X ever day. X becomes the expectation. Just having X won’t make you happy anymore. But if you already have everything… how do you make yourself happy? Elon Musk isn’t happy every day. He’s happy when he achieves something. Imagine if there was nothing for him to achieve.

My thoughts on what Elon means when he says we'll have Universal High Income (UHI): I believe Elon is saying super intelligent AI and robotics will produce essentially infinite labor and therefore infinite services and goods. The cost of writing a legal report is already converging to ~free, so every dollar becomes worth more and more (deflation). The cost of making a trinket will also converge to ~free as robotics ramps up, so buying a lot of them will be easy. Essentially, infinite labor -> infinite goods & services -> costs plummet -> makes everyone feel they have high income. Then when it all really goes bananas, everyone could literally have anything and everything they'd want. Want a video edited? $0.08 in tokens + electricity. Want a deluxe piano? $1.07 for materials + shipping. Want a Neuralink surgery? $69 or $420 depending on the short term happiness you prefer.
Elon Musk@elonmusk

@_kaitodev @garrytan @karpathy All jobs will be optional. There will be universal high income.

The most physically likely way this disaster would have started on an actual mission is some inscrutable systems failure forcing an evacuation. For example, software update breaks on life support, air goes wrong, and Watney's suit won't press. Rest of the crew have to leave him for dead. But no-one wants to read a book that starts with "Then the status light went red for no reason."

The premise of The Martian (2015) is scientifically impossible. Author Andy Weir admitted that the atmosphere on Mars is so thin that even a 150 mph storm would feel like a light breeze and could never tip a rocket, but he needed a catalyst.
