I annotated the House Committee on Education and the Workforce’s 325-page report on antisemitism on college campuses for @ColumbiaSpec. Over 143 pages of the report feature materials from Columbia and Barnard. Here are some of the top takeaways 🧵columbiaspectator.com/news/2024/11/2…

If this country didn’t treat incarcerated people like they’re subhuman, this story would be all over every news platform. But because these are Black men and the US prison system is the evolution of American chattel slavery, people don’t care.

“In a span of just two weeks, a dozen Black men at Red Onion prison in Virginia took the same desperate measures, setting themselves ablaze. These are not acts of protest. These are human beings driven to extreme lengths, hoping for relief from torment.” prisonradio.org/news-update/se…

PEN America is deeply alarmed over House passage of a bill allowing the Treasury Secretary to revoke the tax-exempt status of any 501c3 by designating it as supporting terrorism. The bill could have far-reaching implications across the political spectrum. pen.org/press-release/…

Let’s please take great care right now.Please. Every stride we made on civil rights in America was “opposed by the electoral majority”. Dr King if read through our coarse data lens was the leader of a cause that was always “under water” with the electorate. We need to take care
Jon Favreau@jonfavs

Dems should resist any group or special interest that pressures them to take positions opposed by the electoral majority essential to win, whether that’s big corporations, rich donors, nonprofits, whoever. This isn’t about blaming specific groups for defeat - it’s about what’s required to win.

I remember in 2016 receiving emails from university presidents saying that campuses would remain safe, vibrant spaces where diversity was respected and undocumented students would be protected. I have received no such email which suggests to me a real normalization of this.

So…Ben Carson wrote the housing plan under Project 2025 (yes, that Dr. Ben Carson). I won’t pull any punches…if you were saving to buy a house or move to an apt, get that done now.

This!!! If you are in higher ed, now is the time to organize to preserve and foster and grow spaces of debate, dissent, thought, and learning. Join grow or start an AAUP chapter at your university.
UAM-UMD@UAM_UMD

What do the election results mean for higher ed? To quote Vice President JD Vance: "The professors are the enemy." We must organize w/ @AAUP @AFTunion @AFTHigherEd to get ready for the coming Project 2025 onslaught on higher ed. Find out how here: uamumd.org/professors-are…

I wrote about Joe Biden, who deserves much of the blame for Harris’ defeat. Biden likes to say he ran in 2020 to save democracy from Trump. By refusing to relinquish power until it was too late, he handed the country back to him on a silver platter. That will be his legacy. 🧵
The Atlantic@TheAtlantic

“There is plenty of blame to go around, and much of it will be directed at Kamala Harris. Rightly so,” writes @Tyler_A_Harper. However, “she had an 81-year-old albatross hanging around her neck: Joe Biden”: theatlantic.com/politics/archi…

A HS teacher just emailed me to say: "Your cheat sheet is a lifesaver: it's portable so students can add to it as they watch results come in, and it drives home the message of how critical down-ballot races are." Literally the dream sort of email to get. Share it along! (↓)
Taniel@Taniel

NEW: My cheat sheet to Tuesday features more than 500 races up and down the ballot. Now we have it in PDF, printable form: Save it, print it, give it to your kids to color the electoral college, & use it your worksheet on Tuesday night. Find it here: boltsmag.org/whats-on-the-b…

What I think about in wake of Quincy Jones’ death is how big and audacious his life was. His grandfather was a slave. It’s not like he descended from talented tenthers. His imagination, talent, charisma-and amazingly good fortune-took him places almost no black men had ever been

The Museum of the City of New York has an awesome new exhibition on Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman in Congress and first to run for President. She’d be 100 this year. I’m a trained guide at the museum so don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like a tour. It’s very timely!
