A rather testy Greg Meeks, top Dem on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, tells our Hill intern Lilly Franks that he is not bringing the Iran War Powers vote on to the floor this week because he is confident it would lose. He won't force a vote today or tomorrow "because we can’t win. When you see me put the bill on the floor, that means we’re gonna win. I know how to count," he said. "I know how to do my job." Current whip count has Dems at least at a tie (which is a loss) but they'd win if Nancy Mace or any other Republican votes yes. Advocates of the WPR are saying now is the time to force Republicans to take the vote, before Trump launches ground operations.
Ryan Grim@ryangrim

Warren Davidson tells me he remains a yes on the War Powers vote. If Nancy Mace is also a yes then war opponents now have a majority to pass this thing. Only way to find out if Mace is a firm yes is to put it on the floor before tomorrow's recess.

@RepMoskowitz Routine! In other words, outpatient! You need to get your ass back to DC and do your job. Some people are trying to schedule a war powers resolution vote, but you know that. It's a real double-edged sword, piss off your constituents or your donors.

@mehdirhasan That's amazing! Would make a great ambassador. This brings to mind Mark Twain's famous quote, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts."

@mehdirhasan Sorry, Mehdi, but you're conflating race and religion. Cleese's bigotry notwithstanding, those are not the same, irrespective of whichever country your discussing or whichever group is in the minority.

@DropSiteNews The answer is no, the state of Israel does not have a right to exist! They are a rogue state who do not abide by international laws or human decency. Their leaders should be arrested and the state put under UN control until a governing council can be appointed/elected.

"AIPAC seems to be drawing a lot of attention, and that's problematic to me" Erm, maybe because of the genocide. Which AIPAC supports. And maybe because AIPAC spends way more than those other lobbies.
Caroline Vakil@CarolineVakil

Asked by @lisakashinsky about the shift of opinions on AIPAC among Democrats and whether he personally would reject money from the group, @CoryBooker says “First and foremost, there is a singling out of AIPAC that is troubling to me.” Says there are Iranian Americans and Turkish Americans who bundle money, adding “There are a lot of ethnic groups that bundle money, and often for things that I don't agree with. But somehow, AIPAC seems to be drawing a lot of attention, and that's problematic to me,” he says. Goes on to say that he doesn’t think anybody should be accepting PAC money from anyone.

Elizabeth Warren endorsed Mallory McMorrow over Dr. Abdul El-Sayed (the actual progressive in the race), which could split the progressive vote and pave the way for a Haley Stevens victory. Political malpractice. Shame on @ewarren.

@DropSiteNews Need to stop using "settlers" when describing these atrocities. Save some ink and just say Israelis, or better yet, thieves. This is state sanctioned theft. They didn't show up in covered wagons, they came with guns and permission from the IDF to do whatever tf they want

Israeli settlers sexually assaulted a Palestinian man during a violent overnight raid on Khirbet Humsa in the northern Jordan Valley, according to witness testimonies reported by Haaretz. Witnesses say dozens of masked settlers stormed the community around 1 a.m., dragged families from their tents, zip-tied men, women, and children, and forced them to watch as the man was stripped, doused with water, and beaten into the ground with clubs. Residents and two international activists said settlers beat girls and teenage girls, smashed heads and limbs, and piled bound family members—men, women, and children—on top of each other while continuing the assault. Victims were blindfolded, kicked, and struck repeatedly, while settlers threatened to kill the children and rape the women. Settlers also cut one man with a knife, stole valuables, and released livestock. Six people were evacuated for treatment. Residents said Israeli soldiers later detained them, allowing the settlers to flee. Full story below ⬇️

@ryangrim If anything, he's succeeded in making me dislike Jews more than any rational person should. I have to keep telling myself that it's not ALL Jews, just the Zionists who should be despised; but he has thoroughly destroyed that distinction.

Has anyone been worse at his actual job than Jonathan Greenblatt? If he wants to be an advocate for Likud in DC, he should just do that. Be direct. This thing where he weaponizes concerns about antisemitism to boost Likud is outrageous and also not working.
Ro Khanna@RoKhanna

@AbstractHermit @patrickgaspard @ChrisVanHollen Facts don't matter to Greenblatt. He is a Trump apologist who attacked Obama's nuclear deal, defends Elon, and is basically a shill for the Trump Administration and Netanyahu. Sad to see. He has zero respect among any House Democrats anymore.

Illinois Gov. @JBPritzker does an excellent job of explaining the need to tax social media companies so that they pay for the very serious harms their extractive business model is imposing on society. Good question from @LuluGNavarro & great answer from Pritzker. Impressive.

@bushraamiwala It's at times like these I think it's instructive to ask, WWBLD, what would Brad Lander do? You have no path for victory and you know it! Is your ego more important than solidarity?

When people ask where the "line" is, this is it. We’re tired of the same old "lesser of two evils" politics. It’s time for a representative who is actually UNBOUGHT. One who has been in the trenches with this community for a decade. A fresh perspective from a familiar face. THREE DAYS left of Early Voting! Punch 34

@AriFleischer The author of that piece is R.W. Apple, Jr. He DIED on October 4, 2006. The US war in Afghanistan ended on August 30th, 2021, almost 15 years later. So, please shut your warmongering mouth. If this world had any justice, you and your boss would be swinging at the Hague.

Today’s media cheer against the US, overstate enemy abilities, understate ours and paint a picture that the US is losing, while we’re winning. It’s more true today as they cheer against Trump in Iran. Within 10 days weeks of this 2001 NYT doozy saying our military efforts in Afghanistan were bogged down, the key city of Mazar e Sharif fell to the US and our ally the Northern Alliance, and Kabul fell days later. This story was written a mere three weeks after our counter-offensive against Al Qaeda began. But that didn’t stop the NYT from saying we were already in a quagmire. The media are doing the same thing today in Iran. From a military point of view, Operation Epic Fury has been a huge success. We don’t know yet about who will run Iran, but the press will always see America’s cup as 1/10th empty. If today’s press covered WW II, they would have written mostly about civilian casualties, friendly fire, and failed missions, downplaying the overwhelming allied victories against the Nazis.

@ryangrim It's amazing the juxtaposition between the Iranians, who warn civilians in advance of their attacks, and the US/Israeli forces who bomb schools and hospitals with no warning.

Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions - also known as the fake news - have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up. The law is clear. Broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not. And frankly, changing course is in their own business interests since trust in legacy media has now fallen to an all time low of just 9% and are ratings disasters. The American people have subsidized broadcasters to the tune of billions of dollars by providing free access to the nation’s airwaves. It is very important to bring trust back into media, which has earned itself the label of fake news. When a political candidate is able to win a landslide election victory after in the face of hoaxes and distortions, there is something very wrong. It means the public has lost faith and confidence in the media. And we can’t allow that to happen. Time for change!
