To anyone who says communism and socialism are two different things, take a look at the EU and tell me that you think it isn't looking more and more like the Soviet Union in its authoritarianism and lawlessness. Whether by elections or revolution, it's clearly the same thing.

At a @Marriott I had all USB chargers but only USB-C blocks, and a phone at 30%. Looked for an alarm clock to set for the am. No clock. Called the front desk. "We don't have alarm clocks. We can set up a wake-up call." "There are no alarm clocks in this entire 14-story hotel?" "Nope" "Am I supposed to turn on the TV any time I want to know what time it is?" "I guess" "So if I wake up in the middle of the night and want to know what time it is, and I didn't want to turn on the TV to figure out what time it is, I'd have to, what, call you?" "Why would you want to know what the time is in the middle of the night?" "Here's the thing, when you get old, you wake up a lot in the middle of the night. If you wake up and it's 4:45, you say 'screw it, I'm up, ' but if it's 2 am, you have to figure out how to go back to sleep." "Ok, I'll call housekeeping" Am I the crazy person? Have phones eliminated clocks? Housekeeping had a clock, and as expected, it also had a USB port :)

@xwanyex I agree. I started working for my families businesses in the trades when I was 13. Did it off and on for over a dozen years. I do not remember a single instance where myself nor the rest of the crew said “let’s do ten minutes of stretching before spending 10 hours roofing”.

It’s absolutely true that working in the trades can destroy your body and some of it is unavoidable, but you also have to remember that a lot of these guys are degenerate idiots who don’t do anything to take care of their bodies or avoid repetitive stress injuries. As with everything else, you don’t have to assume that you’re going to get the average, bad outcome.

I feel for the man - he lost a part of his heart and soul. RIP to his grandson. But yes, it’s ignorant. In my line of work I’m deployed all over the south for extended periods, often living in one locale for a whole year. I’m White-Hispanic. I faced a few life threatening situations in places like Jackson Mississippi and Shreveport Louisiana. Pains me to say, because I’m a “content of character” guy… but they explicitly made it clear I was white and not welcome.

Well… yes? Maximizing profits is the point of owning a business after all. Major hotel brands like Marriott or Hilton likely don’t even own 5% of the hotels that use their name. The other 95ish% are owned by franchisees, meaning small or medium sized businesses owners that utilize their brand and infrastructure systems. Brand named grocery stores franchises average around 2% profit margin. I imagine hotel franchises aren’t much higher, maybe 5-8%. If you operate in an area with bad acting low trust thieving clientele, you’re going to adapt as a business owner. Tale as old as time - bad people ruin things for good people.

@TheRealJoeGrizz @txsalth2o @Marriott Such third world standards. There's cost to doing business. The margins are probably slim but buying bulk soap and basics isn't going to break you. It's just a bunch of scabs and gooners fleecing us to maximize profits. Problem is we accept it.

You know, as often as I stay in Marriotts as an ambassador, I really can’t remember if they have clocks or not. I hate them and used to turn them around. Always too bright or some random alarm going off at 3am nonsense. Usually I unplug them to use the outlet. But now that you mention it, it’s been a while since I can definitively recall seeing one.
