ABC News has now taken all FiveThirtyEight articles completely offline. They now redirect to abcnews dot com/politics. A needless erasure of thousands of pages of knowledge.

This will be the highest stakes by-election in U.K history. If Burnham wins, he becomes PM, and does so with proof Reform can be beaten. If he loses, Labour become a lame duck government. If Labour's most popular politician can't hold back Reform, no others can claim to.
Andy Burnham@AndyBurnhamGM

I can confirm that I will be requesting the permission of the NEC to stand in the Makerfield by-election. I grew up in this area and have lived here for 25 years. I care deeply about it and its people. I know they have been let down by national politics. Ten years ago, I decided to leave Westminster. Why? Because, after 16 years, I came to the conclusion that our national political system does not work for areas like ours. I learnt this fighting its failure to invest in the Wigan borough, for justice for the Hillsborough families and against its treatment of Greater Manchester during the pandemic. Over the last decade, I have been challenging this failure from the outside and building a new and better way of doing politics. We have built Greater Manchester into the fastest-growing city-region in the UK and put buses back under public control, introducing a £2 fare cap to help people with cost-of-living pressures. However, there is only so much that can be done from Greater Manchester. Much bigger change is needed at a national level if everyday life is to be made more affordable again. This is why I now seek people’s support to return to Parliament: to bring the change we have brought to Greater Manchester to the whole of the UK and make politics work properly for people. Millions are struggling and they need the Labour Government to succeed. It has already made changes to make life better for them in its first two years. After this week, we owe it to people to come back together as a Labour movement, giving the Prime Minister and the Government the space and stability they need as the by-election takes place. I want to recognise the difficult decision taken by Josh Simons and the sacrifice he and his family are making. I have worked closely with him as Mayor on issues like flooding and illegal waste dumping and have seen first-hand how effective he has been. He has put the communities of Makerfield first, made a real difference for them and should take great pride in that. Finally, I truly do not take a single vote for granted and will work hard to regain the trust of people in the Makerfield constituency, many of whom have long supported our party but lost faith in recent times. We will change Labour for the better and make it a party you can believe in again. ENDS

@DeSantis2024fan Would have to say you’re mistaken. It says if the Secretary of State finds the petition was valid, the law was never actually enacted according to the state constitution. They’re saying (definitively) that would still be true retroactively. Open to hear more why you disagree

@TheReeceEllis It says whether HB1... can only to into effect when approved by a majority of voters cast thereon. This means only if the Nov ref passed, HB1 will be void, so the new map will be used.

An important part of this decision which suggests that there’s at least one more bite at the apple when the Secretary of State inevitably finds the petition was timely and has enough signatures. The Supreme Court has basically said “it’s too early to know, but we will know soon”

The Missouri Supreme Court has upheld the new 7R-1D congressional map, which will be used in the 2026 midterms. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver's Democratic-leaning Kansas City district has been dismantled and replaced with a Republican-leaning seat. MO-05 RVI Before: 🔵 D +12 After: 🔴 R +8.2

In the SCOMO Maggard case today the Mo Supreme Court said they cannot decide now whether the legislature’s Congressional maps are in effect. Once SOS does his job, we can get on to that decision. But SCOMO didn’t decide today. Here’s the money quote.

@baseballot And although state courts may take Purcell concerns into mind they are not bound by them, and the secretary of state waiting until a week before the primary to certify is irresponsible because the court may decide the constitution requires them to freeze the map no matter what

@baseballot However, it wouldn’t necessarily be too late for the court to step in and delay the primary like other states in years past. Especially because the decision was unanimous, and the language is pretty definitive on the map was never enacted if the petition is found valid

@stlpublicradio Will be interesting to see if the Supreme Court is forced to ultimately delay the primary or reopen filing, because this unanimous decision sounds like the constitution is pretty clear what happens IF the petition is found to be valid no matter the date it happens or practicality

JUST IN: In a blow to Democrats, the Missouri Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a Republican-friendly congressional map is in effect. It also rejected two other challenges that the new lines violate constitutional prohibitions on compactness: stlpr.org/government-pol…

@walkeri141 @BlueMissourians @electionsjoe You’re right, on Purcell (not a lawyer and I don’t play one on TV!). I think those practical considerations would still come up for the court however (hard not to if Hoskins waits until Aug). But it’s probably a lot worse for the “Missouri First Map” that Purcell DOESN’T apply

Woah that was fast. That’s that for Cleaver in Missouri - court rules that the maps aren’t paused until SOS certifies Since he will obviously wait until the last second it’ll be too late to suspend the maps for 2026. We’ll see if the referendum passes for future changes
The Redistrict Network@RedistrictNet

#BREAKING: The Missouri Supreme Court rules that that act of merely turning in the redistricting referendum signatures did not automatically suspend HB 1 under article III, sections 49, 52(a), or 52(b) of the Missouri Constitution. courts.mo.gov/file.jsp?id=23…

@DustinKeel4 So you’re correct on the August part, but the fact that this was a unanimous decision that said if the petition is found valid then our constitution says the law never went into effect, I think the Supreme Court is saying it be required to enforce that no matter how impracticable
Reece@TheReeceEllis

@ThePoliticalHQ @BlueMissourians @RedistrictNet @DrewSav The the insane part in this is, of course the Secretary of State theoretically has until the Tuesday before our August primary to figure that out. Not obvious to me that the Supreme Court would let them go through an election that they have already said is unconstitutional.

@TheReeceEllis Do we know how long the SOS has? Primaries are in August. I know one article said the SOS "has until August" to verify, which makes me think it can't run the clock. Two measures for 2024 took about 9 weeks to verify signatures. We're at 5 months though.

@walkeri141 @BlueMissourians @electionsjoe Actually, there’s quite a bit of precedent for a state Supreme Court (AL & NC) delaying a primary/reopening candidate filing/using an interim map. Purcell argues against late election changes, but our state constitution may literally not allow for the court to do anything else

@BlueMissourians @electionsjoe Oh I’m not even talking about partisan wise, like to where they can’t feasibly update the state election systems in time. That’s constrained redraws in other states in the past when it comes to court cases

@jocktag @dakplswin3 So the decision doesn’t actually say that it matters when the Secretary of State finds the petition was valid, just that IF it is found valid, then the map never went into effect because the law was never enacted. So that opens the window for some real chaos if this drags on

@dakplswin3 It all depends whether the Secretary of State decides to acknowledge that the petition is valid, has enough signatures, and was timely filed (which all the above seem to be true, so my read is yes). So I think we’ve got one more case yet to go before the Supreme Court

@RacingYoshi @VoteHub I read it as “if the petition is valid, the law is in fact frozen and Missouri has to use the old maps” which we’ll know soon enough because the Secretary of State does actually have to say and by all accounts the petition seems to be valid. So the next few weeks will tell a lot
