I probably should have put the word “solely” in front of “determine”

@ACTFibernet your service is extremely unreliable. The internet at my home has gone down for two full days, only coming back late evening or night when no one needs to use it. What is going on?

@SwiggyCares so you just don't care if we don't receive what we paid for? Order 196618372401599: neither Cheese Blast nor Paneer cubes topping was included with my order. I just got an automated refund denial email from you folks. This is just a scam at this point.

Spotted bioluminescence in Thiruvanmiyur beach. Was such a brilliant thing to witness. The last time we saw this was in 2019. Wonder what this means. Can't be good.

I have been wrestling with my conscience lately with the type of videos we have been producing. I love planes. Unfortunately most planes are designed for war. So, I need to talk about war to explain the engineering behind them. When Ukraine was invaded I felt justified covering the F-16 in the context of the Ukraine war. That felt okay to me, but I still donated money to Ukraine humanitarian aid charities and mine clearing operations. Lately I have just been so fucking disgusted with what's going on in Palestine, and the US militaries involvement with it. I worry that my work could be construed as propaganda that supports the genocide. I do my best to not cross that line. I have refused money from the US and British militaries multiple times when asked to promote jobs with them. I have donated money to humanitarian aid charities. I have boycotted Israeli YouTube sponsors like Wix. But I'm not sure any of that matters when, on surface level, I glorify planes that are being used to murder innocent children. I don't know how to handle this honestly. This is my career and multiple people rely on me for a living. Do any of ye actually care? Do we just have a mutual understanding that we just like planes? Is there a way to cover these topics in a way that I can make it very clear that I hate war? How can I do better with this?

This is what the tech market should correct for and optimize for. Humanity above everything else.

The same is true for AI. Freely using other people's work for your own material gain is just straight up stealing. If you're smart enough you can figure out a way to implement AI without exploiting other humans.

Lamenting how Uber became just as expensive as taxis shows how tone-deaf you really are. In the name of "disrupting" the market they just refused to pay fair wages and benefits for their workers who they deemed "contractors". nytimes.com/2023/01/12/nyr…
DC@devdcdev

@krishnanrohit The sad thing is the settling dust will just mean AI will be more expensive than anticipated as licensing will be in the billions, and this bottom line will make its way to the user. This is the AI version of Uber now being just as expensive as taxis.

@RoyShilkrot @fchollet Absolutely untrue. Things that slow down most PWAs are poorly formed requests and bloated JSON objects needing to be transferred over and over because the APIs don't support atomic requests. Network/server latency is the bottleneck, not local browser compute.

@fchollet servers most do raw data delivery. anything programmatic / algorithmic is happening locally in JS (even rendering!) anything that would slow you down is local the problem is local, the solution is local.

Computing used to feel fast -- everything ran locally, software was mostly in C/C++ and was kept in check by the need to run on all kinds of old hardware. Now any one of my Chrome tabs is using 100x more RAM than a NeXT workstation had in total.

I asked a top EU leader recently 3 times "what would you do if you were a Palestinian?" The 3rd time, he thought it through, muttered, then said repeatedly "I don't know what Palestinians can do". I said this precisely proves Hamas right. The group's strength doesn't stem from the appeal of its ideology or actions, but from the failure, humiliation & demonization of every single alternative path. Nonviolence, diplomacy, negotiations, advocacy, legal battles, coexistence & peace groups... have been tried countless times by Palestinians only to be crushed by Israel & betrayed by the international community. That very official himself said as soon as he got into office he was told not to bother & give any attention to Gaza or the Palestinians. "You'd burn a lot of political capital", "you'll waste your time", "things are quiet", "it's not going to work"... he was told, & he played along. Hamas' message is always simple: "the international community, negotiations, peace processes...etc won't help us a jot. Look at Mahmoud Abbas, he gave Israel everything they ever asked for, detained & killed scores of Palestinians for them, & got absolutely nothing out of it except humiliation & being labeled by Israel as a terrorist in suit & a great antisemite." Their conclusion has consistently been "if we continue to die slowly, then let's die in a dignified way, take matters into our own hands & strike back the oppressor." Despair, immiseration & trauma always boost this sentiment dramatically. And as long as every other alternative path continues to be foiled & crushed by Israel & betrayed by the international community, Hamas' message will forever stay alive. Palestinian nonviolence requires global non-silence.

This is some peak inane techbro bullshit. Build a massively expensive power gen facility to let computers generate AI waifus. I get that you've hitched your cart to the AI horse. But don't pretend it's anywhere near providing proportionate benefits to what it costs.

They're starting to use nuclear reactors to power the data centers. If that scales it could be the biggest benefit to climate amongst all the bubbles. x.com/TheYogiMan/sta…
