Please explain to me what benefit there is to Wes Streeting in not challenging Keir now. Not resigning makes him look weak. And it makes Andy Burnham/ Rayner/ Miliband more likely to win. What am I missing?

So where are we going next? Moderate Labour MPs are threatening to launch their own open challenge against the prime minister next week.  Rebel ringleaders have told me: “It's not only the left of the party who want Keir to go. These are catastrophic results and we should be acting in the interests of the country." It is understand they are waiting for Starmer’s speech on Monday, which they say will need to be a “game changer”. After that point, they will consider a joint letter to the PM, calling for the PLP committee to allow a vote of no confidence or telling the chief whip they have enough numbers to trigger a contest.

The PM @Keir_Starmer has been clear. These were really tough results for Labour and more needs to change. He’s taken responsibility for that. He’s not once ducked such responsibilities. But we won’t deliver for our communities or serve the national interest by turning in on ourselves. We must dust ourselves off, come together and get back to delivering for the people who elected us with a landslide just two years ago. The PM is right not to walk away or talking timetables. At a moment like this, the country needs focus, stability and delivery, not chaos.

minimum wage discourse in the uk rn is amazing because people with zero experience claim that if small independent businesses can't afford an 18% increase in costs they aren't running a viable business while simultaneously complaining that every big profitable company is evil

@JujuliaGrace Why do businesses need the state to make up the difference in wages for them to be viable. What's it called when the state pays to support something?

Lols this is so funny. A load of capitalists are angry with me because I’ve suggested that if their businesses aren’t enabling them to pay workers properly, then it sounds like they’re running failing businesses …

@cmwrawcliffe As the employee is paying £2700 in tax and £1100 in NI on top of the employers NI I would suggest they are subsidising the state not the other way round No tax or NI below 40 hours a week at minimum wage

If you can't pay people a wage they can live on, your business is subsidised by the state. And that's NOT a sound business model. The economically illiterate person is you, pretending to be a good businessman while expecting others to support you through their taxes .
Peter McCormack 🏴‍☠️🇬🇧🇮🇪@PeterMcCormack

A minimum wage of £15 would end my coffee shop, it would have to close, as would many other businesses. I’ll explain for the economically illiterate. Staff costs are currently half our costs, a £15 minimum wage is actually more than £15 an hour for the company, because you have to add: - 12.07% holiday - Sick pay - Maternity pay if and when required - National insurance - Pension contributions These costs would mean the shop loses money because remember, energy costs are up, rates are up, regulations are up. Now you can pass these costs onto the consumer - that would mean charging a lot more for coffee, people won’t pay it. The likes of Starbucks and Costa can, because they have economies of scale. The independent doesn’t. Now the little socialist will say well this is your fault, if you can’t run a business that can afford to pay its staff properly, but the little socialist has never run a business and does not understand the dynamics. Now I could pay some staff off and fill those hours myself or reduce us to one staff member during certain periods - but this proves the point that a minimum wage costs jobs. There was a time when these jobs were done by kids, perhaps on the weekend, paid a lower wage, no holiday and no silly employment rights. Perhaps they were even paid cash. The dynamic worked and small businesses like this could operate. It was also a great first job. Sadly now it isn’t worth employing entitlement youngsters at this level of pay. So alas, I don’t need the stress, the business would close, a number of jobs would be lost. Economics is about understanding these dynamics, no vibes. The cost of living is not solved through passing on inflation to the business, it is solved by ending high inflation and creating prosperity. This is what socialists don’t understand, they can’t create prosperity, they can only destroy it.

If you can’t afford to pay your employees a living wage you can’t afford a business. No amount of justification changes that. The idea that you should be able to run it off migrant slave labor or “kids” is nonsense. You stated you’re a multi millionaire. So you can afford to pay your employees a living wage and just make less money. It really is that simple.

Peter does not live on the minimum wage. He relies on Universal Credit to top up his workers’ wages to a survivable level so he is nicely off. We pay for people like Peter to run businesses while paying starvation wages.
