Most normies don't understand that water has an absurdly high specific heat capacity. They have no idea. They'll microwave soup for 30 seconds and are so puzzled, then they microwave a chicken breast for two minutes to create microwave a la tsar bomba

@fiat_money @StatisticUrban In no way is this post talking about government debt increasing bond yields. The core claim here is that the governments interest on its debt is growing as a portion of total expenditure

Interest payments on US debt are now ~15% of the total budget, and ever-increasing. No end in sight. But any serious deficit reduction would require broad tax hikes on the middle and upper classes AND major cuts to mandatory spending. Both parties hate that, so good luck.

@someshameingame @AndyMasley @senatorshoshana Infrasound is specifically the sound you cannot hear. The ocean releases a constant 70-90dB infrasound, which kinda undermines most people's arguments of how bad it is to live around infrasound (you'd notice people near the beach getting sick from the noise)

@ClintFiore @lksngy Mate, you're walking for hours because you're a tourist. People who live here don't do that (also, we carry water lol)

Is everyone in Europe dehydrated? Nobody carries water bottles. Water is expensive everywhere and not free at most restaurants. Bathrooms are scarce and often cost money to use. My theory is everyone is ok with this bleak situation because they’re all massively dehydrated, rarely pee, and don’t know the glory of what 1+ gallons of water consumed per day feels like to the human body.

@sciantificnew Imagining that this ID capability would be used to punish bad racists instead of already oppressed minorities is straight up magical thinking IMO

If banning social media for U16s means linking a profile to an ID to verify age then I think that's all the more reason to do it. If you are worried about legal repercussions of what you are saying on SM then that's a pretty good hint that you probably shouldn't be saying it.

@Anonpart3117493 The whole program was the government relaxing its otherwise onerous testing requirements so private industry could develop a treatment and get it to market without the usual restrictions.

@infomeh look into cp company's goggle jackets. it's better than their beanies. the hood is a better form factor + their goggle jacket is an icon look since the 80s hooligans brought it on a scene.

@jxmnop Honestly I still think we're in the 15 to 20 stage, or even less. I think you're underestimating just how good it's going to get

Obviously "the market is a bunch of dummies who can't tell SpaceX is a giant bubble and Elon Musk is a drooling imbecile whose brain is slowly turning into soup" would be a little too convenient for my priors, so I'm skeptical. But I can't fully shake the feeling. What gives?

@burntbulb @Duderichy @del4rel Taxing stocks rather than flows is a bad idea because it forces people to divest from productive companies. These policies would act on a tax on every American industry

@hellspatisserie My absolute least favorite experience when living in America was the dentist. They would take 1 look at my teeth, say "oh we need to do a fluoride treatment and a gums cleaning" and then shove a clipboard in my face to sign off on $400 of.... some paste on my gums

To nuclear specs and with quality control, review etc, it really does. In a different universe with rational planning and regulatory rules you might be right, but back here in the real world mass production is the only feasible solution to drive costs down and increase throughput massively

Small modular nuclear reactors are a bad idea. They're a technological solution to a political problem (too much regulation of nuclear power). Nuclear reactors want to be big, because of the scaling of surface area and volume: you want more volume per unit surface area because surface area is a cost.
Douglas Carswell🇬🇧🇺🇸@DouglasCarswell

Can’t help thinking that which design of the new mini reactors we settle on is one of the big issues of our age

@hankgreen Hank, I think you're a brilliant guy but this is truly a disastrous policy. Many EU countries have tried it and it never works well, if not because of capital flight but because it HEAVILY incentivizes spending rather than investing. Listen to economists
