@The_FJC To whitewash this self enrichment is a great achievement! And: The IRS isn’t allowed to check the taxes of the tax cheat and his family as well.

Trump turned down a $10 billion dollar settlement from the IRS for illegally leaking his tax returns. Instead of accepting the money, he chose to defer and have the US government create a fund of $1.776 billion for those who suffered as he did. The claim was made under valid US laws. Any other president like Obama or Biden would have taken the money and run. Trump not only put America First, he put AMERICANS first, over himself.

@sergeian @Filopator81 @Wandregisel98 @DickJanssen7 I have only 280 letters. The Russian speaking minority in the East didn’t have bigger problems until 2014. And we have mainly to know that Ukrainian borders are internationally recognized. And if a part of a country wanted to be separated, there’s a process in Europe. War isn’t.

@ToBo_CH @Filopator81 @Wandregisel98 @DickJanssen7 You don't know the history of that region well. Due to its geography, they fell under the influence of neighboring powers. At times, their elites would shift their allegiances practically several times a day. The ground was prepared, all that remained was to deepen and direct.

If Europe joins Russia in the escalation spiral and does not convince Ukraine to make territorial and political concessions, then all current complaints about Russia's violence will appear like peanuts compared to what lies ahead. Concessions are justified not by Russia’s aggression, but are made inevitable by the strategic blunders of the EU, NATO, and Ukraine in transferring this deeply divided nation from a neutral position into the Western camp at the expense of economically beneficial relations with Russia. This transfer goes against the interests of average European citizens and only serves the hubris of European political elites — which explains the internal divisions within Europe and, consequently, its diplomatic paralysis.
Alexander Stubb@alexstubb

Last night Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on Kyiv. Once again, it targeted residential areas and civilian infrastructure.  This senseless war of aggression has to be stopped. We must continue putting pressure on Russia’s war machine and increase our support to Ukraine.

Can someone please explain why Europe does nothing to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz? It has much more to lose than the US. But hey, who needs oil, jet fuel, and gas for next winter, right?

@sergeian @Filopator81 @Wandregisel98 @DickJanssen7 We have polls and elections. Of course the US always meddles somewhat. But there’s a big majority for stronger connections with Europe. The separatist „movement“ started after the Krim invasion by „green men“. It’s an obvious covert operation.

Not a hill worth dying on, but whenever you criticise mandated Sunday closures you get a few retorts that are especially flimsy: 1. "Just plan around it bro." Thank you for this profound insight. Most people already plan their shopping, the issue with mandated closures is that more things must compete in one's planning for fewer time slots and with more people doing the same things at the same time in those fewer time slots. It's a cost. 2. "I like taking walks on Sunday tho bro." That's great, you might discover you can also take walks on Sunday even if the supermarkets are open. Rhetoric about a common rest day sounds good but the truth is that millions of Germans already work on Sundays. We've chosen one specific high-impact sector to close, then we added a bunch of exceptions (train station retail, apothecaries, bakeries, restaurants, cafes, etc.), and now we have to pretend like there's a principle, when in fact this debate is entirely about details. 3. "But consumerism sucks bro": Great, let's really put the knife into consumerism and force everybody to close on Saturday too. The truth is it's fun to say things like this but forcing retail to close on Sunday has real documented costs, a lot of squishy subjective benefits, and everywhere these laws have been liberalised there is no demand to go back.
eugyppius@eugyppius1

Sunday shop closures are the worst thing about Germany and I didn't even realise this until gf moved to Warnemünde where the shops are open on Sunday because of some tourism dispensation and it is easily a 20% across-the-board improvement in quality of life.

@ConciousLabRat As the Ukrainian government warned in advance, most people went to shelters. Of course, Russia could find some legitimate targets (as Ukraine does). But bombarding Kiev‘s Sewage treatment plant to get an environmental disaster and possibly epidemics isn’t a legitimate target.

@daveg Or simpler. As it was a need for 3 weeks, we didn’t see it worthwhile to get AC. With climate change accelerating, more people think about it or getting it. As many Swiss (or German) homes central heating aren’t suited for AC, it would be a very slow process.

The Swiss grid is almost completely carbon free, yet it is largely illegal to install air conditioning in a house in Geneva, without a doctor's note and heat pumps have the a/c mode disabled and fines issued if used. A mean spirited degrowth mindset that transcends class and hides behind an environmental narrative even when it has nothing to do with the environment, like here. This is emblematic of a pathological hatred of the future and progress, that is a threat to Europe.
Atticus@redl3tters

One of my business school friends comes from a wealthy Swiss banking family and lives in the ritzy part of Geneva where the average house is in the tens-of-millions range. When I visit, I stay in his guest room and sweat profusely at night because, for all their wealth, these bozos can’t understand the unmatched pleasure that is a nice, cool room to sleep in at night. Bunch of uncultured rubes.

@redl3tters @Liathetrader With climate change, your wish will come through. As the duration of heat waves get longer, I‘m thinking as well about AC, when it’s hot. But 11 months of the year I don’t think of it. And now, as thousands of Americans write about it.

The weirdest thing about the “europoor no AC” discourse is that there is AC everywhere in Southern and Eastern Europe so this is obviously not a financial issue. It is an ideological issue in Northwestern Europe, which is admittedly even funnier.

@basilaev_oloxoy Of course that’s bullshit. The living standards from 1960-1980 in western Europe & the USA were far higher. Heck, the living standards in Eastern Germany was higher than in the USSR. The development of the USSR from 1910-1970 was still impressive.

@Parkidem_Sofia You write so well, you can’t be this ignorant. By starting an illegal attack war and killing civilians since 2014, Russia can’t be surprised and appalled that Ukraine is defending itself and strikes back. Ukraine damages mostly military & industrial targets. Russia could retreat.

Our children are not fake. Their lives are not fake. I'm a mother of four children, I have three daughters. As a woman, as a mother, it's unbearable for me to see teenage girls who were killed in their sleep. And I don't understand how women representing European countries in the UN call the dead bodies of girls killed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Starobilsk a "fake". How warped must a woman's consciousness be to turn a blind eye to the war against children? This is a degeneration of the feminine principle. Even Russian media outlets opposed to the Russian government are reporting that the Armed Forces of Ukraine did indeed strike the college. There was no Rubicon nearby. Journalists, Russian journalists who have left and are working for foreign publications, you may hate the authorities, your colleagues who have chosen a different side, but these are your children by blood, Russian children. Girls. If you stay silent and write lies that nothing happened and it's a "fake", then tomorrow they will kill the children of your friends, your relatives, your children. We need to convey the truth through all possible means. Our Human Rights Ombudsman, Yana Lantratova, is already writing in English specifically so that at least someone might show conscience and convey the truth, which the West is shying away from, because admitting the truth means admitting that they are sponsoring a regime that kills children. After all, not only these children died. In Lisichansk, a 17-year-old girl, a student of Dal' National University, was killed by a drone in two days. The Belgorod and Kursk regions are drenched in the blood of civilians. The strikes by French missiles on a children's playground - that's not a "fake" either. There's a deliberate genocide of the Russian population going on. And it's no longer hidden. It's time for Russians to wake up. If you're a journalist - write the truth, if you just live abroad - don't grovel, defend your spirit and Russia, if you're doing business - don't put money above your homeland. All Russian people should unite and the authorities don't even matter here - unite for the country. Our civilization is at stake. t.me/lantratovaDOBR…
