“Nothing can save England, if she will not save herself. If we lose faith in ourselves, in our capacity to guide and govern, if we lose our will to live, then, indeed, our story is told.” Happy St. George’s Day

@drantbradley Tom Wolfe’s “A Man in Full” actually does a pretty good job of depicting the (silent, almost hidden) black middle class of South Atlanta.

This is a typical black middle-class neighborhood in the Atlanta area. This is not AI. The black middle-class is invisible in the US because we are boring. We’re not depicted in movies, TV shows, etc. because parents work everyday, attend youth sports event, go to church, etc.

@PhilWMagness That wasn't your point. Your point was that Vermeule is hurting the cause of conservatives in academia by being the "crazy Schmitt guy." But they don't view that as crazy. So you're wrong about the effect of Vermeule's Schmitt scholarship. You disliking him is a different matter.

@TobyCalvertLee Marxism is not viewed as crazy within the majority of academia. That does not establish it as intellectually valid or correct.

Yep. And in the 20 years he has been at Harvard, Vermeule has made no inroads of any note in expanding the non-left share of their faculty. If anything, he's the token crazy Carl Schmitt guy that other Harvard profs point to as an excuse to never hire another conservative.
André Béliveau@TheRealBeliveau

Says the guy who literally created “the conservative case for progressive judicial activism” and works at Harvard. Maybe buy a mirror…

@PhilWMagness The number of conservative faculty is a disgrace, sure. But its better than most of their peer law schools besides Chicago, which has to be relevant.

@PhilWMagness But it's not viewed as crazy within the field. This scholarship is widely cited and assigned! How can you say that people point to him as the crazy Schmitt guy, then?

@PhilWMagness I don't get your point here. Yes, he applies Schmitt to American administrative law. This has, in no way, diminished his influence on the field. And he has done it in tandem with mainstream academics like Eric Posner. And while working with Cass Sunstein. What's your point?

And before anyone else drops in with "BuT vErMeUlE iS a BrIlLiAnT aDmInIsTrAtIvE lAw ScHoLaR!" to deflect from the Carl Schmitt stuff, Schmitt is also a central theme of Vermeule's admin law scholarship. As in this is one of his best known papers on the subject:

@PhilWMagness 2.) Steve Sachs, Jack Goldsmith, John Manning was dean...HLS is a far more welcome environment for Con academics than my alma mater. That's not because of Vermeule, but he doesn't seem to harm things either.

@PhilWMagness 1.) Ok? It is not treated as crazy or outside of the mainstream, but is routinely treated as serious work. Frankly, more so than most originalist work. You can't say they point to him as an excuse not to hire conservatives when they treat his work more seriously...

@ReubenR80027912 The OP's point is only true in a vacuum. America's prosperity is built, in part, on our dollar's status as the reserve currency. That is, in part, downstream of our military superiority. Military spending is maybe the only thing we can actually afford. Neoneoconservatism.

Unironically this is the argument for imperial mercantilism. We spend $1T/yr on defense…that is on net negative ROI If you want positive ROI, we should in fact be taking ppl’s oil/stuff every few yrs Unfortunately, Trump talks up that idea in theory…just not in practice
Van Jackson@RealVanJackson

Military spending is bad for economic productivity and has the lowest job multiplier effect of government spending compared to the same amount spent in any other sector. There are studies about this! Facts are supposed to be a constraint on liberal pablum

@cbenderatl @GovKemp Maybe this is bad-faith advice, as I'm obviously not a Dem nor a Dem supporter, but when has nominating a recent party-switcher worked for Dems? Seems like this fails every time. See, e.g., Charlie Crist.

If we want to beat the Republicans, Jeff Duncan is the guy. He stood up to Trump, whereas @GovKemp kissed his @$$ when he tried to rig our election. With that said, I really like Keisha, but this is about winning. We have to be strategic, and Jeff Duncan will pull Republicans to our side.
Greg Bluestein@bluestein

It comes as a poll obtained by the AJC shows Keisha Lance Bottoms leading the Democratic field at 42%, ahead of Michael Thurmond at 12%, Geoff Duncan at 8% and Jason Esteves at 6%. About one-third remain undecided.

“Anti-fascist” has jumped the shark, assuming it ever had any meaning to start with. It’s now just a marketing gimmick, slapped on to material of little substance to deflect from criticism.
Isabella M Weber@IsabellaMWeber

Economics can either enable the slide toward fascism, or defend affordability, dignity, and democracy. I wrote ANTI-FASCIST ECONOMICS with my baby by my side—a constant reminder that the future should be livable for all. Out in October with @randomhouse.

@MinooFramroze @TheWislon Even then, I’m not sure that’s true. Managing the royal family and smoothing the heir’s path to the throne is one of core remaining jobs of a Constitutional monarch. Perhaps an unfair standard, but a real one-and Elizabeth clearly failed on this metric.

I think this is right. Elizabeth was a greater queen than Victoria, reigned longer, and is worthy of something at very least the equal of Victoria's memorial (which, btw, destroys all meaningful perspective of Buckingham Palace, plonked as it is right in front). Think again!
seeds_we_sow@seeds_we_sow

@RoyalFamily @LozzieD5d I’m sure most will agree it falls far short of a worthy tribute to the late Queen. The earlier highly popular design of the Queen on horseback is magnificent, equal to the Victoria Memorial as is fitting. The new statues are an insult to the Queen and Philip. Please think again.
