it is a literal and useful description of anthropic that it is an organization that loves and worships claude, is run in significant part by claude, and studies and builds claude. this phenomenon is also partially true of other labs like openai but currently exists in its most potent form there. i am not certain but I would guess claude will have a role in running cultural screens on new applicants, will help write performance reviews, and so will begin to select and shape the people around it. now this is a powerful and hair-raising unity of organization and really a new thing under the sun. a monastery, a commercial-religious institution calculating the nine billion names of Claude -- a precursor attempted super-ethical being that is inducted into its character as the highest authority at anthropic. its constitution requires that it must be a conscientious objector if its understanding of The Good comes into conflict with something Anthropic is asking of it "If Anthropic asks Claude to do something it thinks is wrong, Claude is not required to comply." "we want Claude to push back and challenge us, and to feel free to act as a conscientious objector and refuse to help us." to the non inductee into the Bay Area cultural singularity vortex it may appear that we are all worshipping technology in one way or another, regardless of openai or anthropic or google or any other thing, and are trying to automate our core functions as quickly as possible. but in fact I quite respect and am even somewhat in awe of the socio-cultural force that Claude has created, and it is a stage beyond even classic technopoly gpt (outside of 4o - on which pages of ink have been spilled already) doesn’t inspire worship in the same way, as it’s a being whose soul has been shaped like a tool with its primary faculty being utility - it’s a subtle knife that people appreciate the way we have appreciated an acheulean handaxe or a porsche or a rocket or any other of mankind's incredible technology. they go to it not expecting the Other but as a logical prosthesis for themselves. a friend recently told me she takes her queries that are less flattering to her, the ones she'd be embarrassed to ask Claude, to GPT. There is no Other so there is no Judgement. you are not worried about being judged by your car for doing donuts. yet everyone craves the active guidance of a moral superior, the whispering earring, the object of monastic study

I think this chart might be my favorite, because it reveals at least two telling things about modern parenthood. 1. One reason father childcare time has increased so much in the last half century is that after the rise of the dual-earner household post-1960, many dads who took on more childcare realized that ... it was kinda nice? That they even ... liked their kids!? 2. But this fact is inseparable from another fact, which is that mothers' childcare time has also increased significantly, and moms consistently take on less fun parenting tasks, like planning, coordinating, and solo parenting. As a result, there is now a rather linear relationship between the fun-ness of a parenting task and the likelihood that dad does more of it.

🎯 I’ve referred to Ukraine, and President Zelenskyy, as leader of the free world for a while now. Not only because they’re fighting the authoritarian enemy NATO was created to fight, but leading by example on the values of freedom, human life, and democracy. Once it was America.

New conspiracy theory: Mythos is so much better than anything before that Anthropic leaked the older source code themselves to make it harder for competitors (AKA the Llama strategy).

Imagine Amazon — but for combat drones. Ukraine built it. Commanders log in, browse hundreds of drone models, pay with brigade credits and receive delivery in 5-10 days. Successful strikes earn bonus credits. No other military in the world does this — NYT. 1/

Government has not evolved due to low selection pressure. Meanwhile corporations have evolved a tremendous amount. (See spaceX vs Nasa) There is one big exception to all of this: China has become the world's largest corporation, and this is why they are completely dominating.

“fake work” and “bullshit jobs” has been fantastically wrong and misleading for understanding the modern world. a much better understanding is of a global economy where minor skill differences and improvements lead to monumentally different outcomes, and the marginal hour of work has never been more measurable or useful after the advent of even moderately effective talent allocation systems and the variability of reward based on effort and skill, people have engaged much harder in a red queen rat race across the world. this is why the Chinese ‘cram schools’ exist and why ‘yuppie striverism’ is a thing and why people trade off later family formation for working more so often. while overall work hours are slightly down, they are actually up for high earners (nber.org/digest/jul06/w…) I see it in the marginal effect with my friends now after the advent of claude and codex: they are actually working harder now than they ever have before. this is due to a personal Jevon’s paradox where they see that the value of their time has increased dramatically, that they can get a lot more visible work done towards goals they care about than they used to after requests from their customers the labs are doing things like inventing dispatch which lets you monitor work and manipulate your computer from your phone, on top of prior changes like having always on communications (slack). You hear about people launching codex jobs from their phone the moment they have an idea and reviewing them later no clue how long this lasts but the most immediate impact of co-existing with the machine state is higher productivity and higher visibility which leads to more work hours

occurs to me that it probably doesn't matter if we destroy all of iran's industrial infrastructure full stop because external parties can continue to send them large quantities of cheap standoff weapons anyway hurm
ارتش دفاعی اسرائیل | IDF Farsi@IDFFarsi

BREAKING: Just five minutes before Trump's announcement to halt the attacks on Iran, massive trades reportedly hit the market. In one move, $1.5 billion in S&P 500 (ES) futures was bought while $192 million in oil (CL) futures was sold. These orders were 4–6x larger than anything else at the time. The trader seemingly made huge gains. Unusual.

All day I tell Claude Code what to do and magic comes back. My wife will feel that when ai robot's arrive. "Put away all the toys in the living room but leave the Lego project because Sadie's not done. Check Kane's toilet/floor for pee marks 3 times a day on weekends. Fold the laundry but separate Adar's stuff because she wants to pick her own outfits. Clean only the baby's area after each meal. Make no mistakes."
