@grout21270 @jtworr Was a serious conflict fought over Chagos costing several hundred lives? No. I'm against giving away Chagos but this is comparing apples and oranges. Besides, the American global empire won't exist in 10years due to Iran debacle. Deterrence in Asia is gone, so Chagos is moot.

The most amazing aspect of the ceasefire is that cumulating Iranian pressure on the world economy and the US continues, while the US has ceased imposing any costs on Iran. That tells you a lot about who has the upper hand in the haggling.

People are obsessing over the wrong thing. It's not tankers going through Hormuz. That's mostly signaling. When tankers can go through Hormuz again in real numbers, that will allow regional producers to start unwinding shut-ins. Right now, it's approx. 10 million bpd. That's what is hitting global economy. Not the movement of ships.

I'd also say on this that you can achieve a goal without talking loudly about it, and moreover that this is often necessary in politics. If you want to e.g. gradually move back towards something like 90s demographic stability, you don't need to loudly start an argument about it. You just quietly move the levers.

Politics is the art of prioritisation and the possible, and getting things done. It's fine to fudge second- or third-rank issues to free up time and energy for first-rank ones.
