The FBI had been planning those operations for days in advance. The last-minute additions were pure theater, engineered to juice Patel's scorecard. Meanwhile, the real numbers tell a different story. Under Patel's "record" leadership, the FBI has lost 2,800 agents in a single year — four times the normal attrition rate. Yet, Patel told senators that morale at the bureau has "never been better," to their visible disbelief. When senators tried pressing Patel on his branded bourbon giveaways, his government jet joyrides to VIP events, his taxpayer-funded security detail for his girlfriend, and his retaliatory polygraphing of dozens of agents, he waved his placard and called everything "baseless." Sen. Patty Murray had the perfect response: "If you want to pass out liquor or pop bottles in a locker room, stick to podcasting."
