Newsom just called CA High-Speed Rail "fast, easy, and affordable." Let's break that down. "Fast" - No track has been laid in 17 years. The whole thing was supposed to finished in 2020. The NY Times found it isn't on pace to be completed this century. Other countries have brought bullet trains fully online in less time than it's taken California to start laying track. Even if built, Newsom's train would travel 2 to 3 times slower than what China is working on. "Easy" - Even if the Rail Authority meets its most wildly optimistic projections and finishes the Palmdale-Gilroy line by 2045, this means a full LA to SF trip will take 6 hours using 3 different transit systems and plenty of driving. It is arguably "easier" to take an hour-long flight, which you could do today. "Affordable" - So far, $17 billion has been spent with nothing to show for it. The total project cost is now $126 billion, up from $33 billion. The Rail Authority claims if everything goes perfectly a ticket will cost 80 percent what a plane ticket does. But that doesn't account for the thousands of dollars the average taxpayer will have paid to build the system.
