Where the country that funded Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons program in the 1980s launched a war in 2003 to remove Saddam Hussein for having chemical weapons. Where the country that armed, trained, and created the conditions for the Taliban spent twenty years fighting the Taliban. Where the country that sanctioned Iraq through the 1990s, killing an estimated 500,000 children through the denial of medicine and food, a number Madeleine Albright called "worth it" on national television, explained that it was doing so because it cared about the Iraqi people. Just moments ago, President Trump stated that every time Iran strikes a vessel, the United States will destroy a bridge or power plant inside of Iran. At the most basic level, this is what we call "looking for a reason to commit atrocities". The most likely scenario in the US/Iran War is that the United States continues to waged all-out economic warfare against Iran. This is done via a combination of maximum-pressure sanctions, the US blockade, and the systematic and overwhelming targeting of civilian and economic infrastructure inside of Iran. The goal is undeniable: maximum civilian suffering. That IS the goal here. Blowing up a bridge is not going to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Neither will destroying a power plant. If there is anything we have all learned throughout this conflict, it's that Iran's asymmetric warfare capabilities, when paired with their geographical positioning, borders on insurmountable. No. The GOAL from targeting economic and civilian infrastructure inside of Iran is to make the civilian population suffer as much as possible, and this is where the Trump Administration has a fundamentally broken understanding of economic warfare. The best, and perhaps only, chance that the United States has to win this war is by the Iranian civilians rising up in protest and toppling the regime. Unfortunately, this is something that President Trump has made almost a fantasy due to a plethora of missteps throughout this war that have garnered domestic support, and undoubtedly turned the Iranian people against the United States. It started on the very first day of the war. Not only did we assassinate a religious leader in the Ayatollah, but we also killed 168 children in a triple-tap bombing of the school in Minab. Even worse? We tried to cover it up and sweep it under the rug. Then came President Trump's threat to wipe out Iran's entire civilization. Not "the regime", their entire civilization. Then we bombed pharmaceutical, petrochemical, and steel manufacturing plants that put almost a million people out of work. After this came a blockade specifically meant to cut off Iran's ability to access wheat, medical supplies, cooking oil, and proteins. Then we bombed their water storage facilities, water infrastructure, and water desalination. There IS NO HOPE for the Iranian people rising up and toppling the regime anymore. President Trump has ensured that this is nothing but a delusion at this point. So what is the PURPOSE behind striking bridges and power plants? It's certainly not to reopen the Strait of Hormuz at this point. We've tried that for five months with no success. Iran still has a plethora of missiles and drones. They still have divers with limpet mines. They still have fast boats. They still have mines that can be released from boats. The only purpose that the intentional targeting of bridges and power plants inside of Iran would serve is to make the innocent Iranian civilians suffer. They're not going to rise up and topple the regime. We're not going to be able to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by pursuing this strategy. This is only about making civilians suffer.

The more I look at the flows in the Strait of Hormuz, or more accurately, the flows out of Gulf countries, the more I believe that Iran is underplaying their hand. You’re dealing with rerouting via the Red Sea, Omani Route transits (wildly dangerous but continuing), increased production outside the Gulf, and Strategic Petroleum Reserve releases… At some point, Iran will need to escalate to accelerate global decline or otherwise risk excessive damage to their own domestic economy. The problem with all of this is… Iran can escalate in any number of ways…

Not only does the US not have the military means to defeat Iran, it does not have the military means to prevent Iran from imposing its exclusive authority over Hormuz. The US should’ve honored the MOU it signed. At least we could’ve saved a bit of face and brought Iran in from the cold. The next one is going to be even more humiliating than the MOU. In particular, Iran is not going to give up Hormuz. If a diplomatic off-ramp is still not found, as would be the case unless the US accepts Iranian authority over Hormuz, this ends either with a nuclear-armed Iran or with the empire disarmed, or both. Regardless of how this ends, Iran will keep Hormuz forever for the same reason that the US will control the Panama Canal. The reason all this is happening is very simple. The empire is no longer viable as an imperial project. Posen’s command of the global commons is gone. It was based on a decisive military advantage that has vanished with the arrival with the mature precision-strike regime. You can’t argue with a technological era. You can bash your head against the wall. But all the head-bashing is only going to yield more pain and humiliation. It’s very important to know when to fold; to accept defeat and to understand it, so that the means and ends of foreign policy can be brought back into balance.

Bombing Pickaxe Mountain would solve nothing for the United States. At the most fundamental level, the Iran Hawks and Israeli Lobby would never believe that destroying this (if it even can be) would stop the Iranian pursuit of a nuclear weapon, and within a year, mark my words, Netanyahu would be on the megaphone screaming "they're two weeks away!" The Strait of Hormuz? Still closed. Global economy? Still hostage. American solutions? Vaporware. It's, at best, a way to claim a hollow victory. A victory that no one besides his most ardent supporters would fall for, and would still force Trump to make more embarrassing concessions to the Iranian's.

The principle was established after Israel's 1981 attack on Iraq's Osirak reactor, when the Security Council, through Resolution 487, condemned the strike as a clear violation of the UN Charter and affirmed the applicable prohibition. The General Conference then went further. In 1985 it declared that any armed attack on, or threat against, nuclear facilities constituted a violation of the Charter, international law, and the Statute. In 1990 it stated that a threat of armed attack against a safeguarded nuclear facility created a situation requiring immediate action by the Security Council, a position reaffirmed in 2009. This is not a fringe interpretation or an argument resting on political rhetoric. It reflects a position adopted repeatedly by the IAEA across decades. The legal issue arises not only when the first bomb falls, but the moment a credible threat is made. Two questions therefore demand an answer. First, why has the Security Council not convened? In 1981, faced with an accomplished attack on a reactor, it acted through Resolution 487. Today, faced with an openly declared threat against a safeguarded facility — precisely the situation the General Conference in 1990 said required immediate Council action — it remains silent. If the Osirak precedent carries any weight, the threat alone is enough to place the matter before it. Second, why is the Director General, @rafaelmgrossi, not addressing this urgently? The Agency's emergency mechanisms are already monitoring developments in Iran, and he has a clear duty to act. If the IAEA's established principles are to mean anything, the Director General cannot remain silent while a direct, public threat is made against a nuclear installation.
