The #BiscarFire in Lassen County is now the largest fire in California so far in 2026, burning 29,752 acres as of the recently updated perimeter. This fire is burning in a very isolated part of the state, but there are still some structures dotted across the landscape. We’ve mostly been watching this one from distant webcams and satellite imagery. Containment is at 5%.

This exchange just happened on the Senate floor. Cornyn: “I don’t understand how the SAVE Act disenfranchises voters.” Durbin: “Happy to explain. Driver’s licenses don’t qualify under the bill. 50% of Americans don’t have passports.” Cornyn: “Why not just amend it?” Durbin: “When’s the last time the Senate actually amended a bill?” Silence. The SAVE Act requires passport-level documentation to register to vote. 50% of Americans don’t have a passport. The people least likely to have passports: the elderly, the poor, rural Americans, young first-time voters. The people most likely to have passports: wealthy Americans. This is not voter protection. This is voter selection. And when a senator suggested fixing it — his own colleague couldn’t name the last time the Senate amended anything. That’s the Senate in 2026.

A primetime address doesn't rewrite the historical record. Tonight, Trump alleged massive foreign election interference, demanded Congress pass the SAVE America Act, and even called for ABC and NBC to lose their broadcast licenses for declining to air his speech live. But one detail stood out. White House adviser John Solomon reportedly acknowledged there is zero evidence that any foreign power actually flipped votes in the 2020, 2022, or 2024 elections. Claims are political. Evidence is judicial. Those are not the same thing.

The Republican Save America Act removes the requirement to inform voters when their name is removed from the role. A voter would not find out their name has been removed until they attempted to vote. Why does ANYONE believe THIS is a good idea?

Only US citizens can vote. The SAVE America Act is a voter suppression bill. The accepted forms of ID to vote under the SAVE America Act: 1. Enhanced REAL ID: Only available in 5 states. Costs up to $50 (poll tax) and requires a birth certificate which 40M Americans lack access to. 2. Valid passport: 146M Americans do not have and costs at least $130 (poll tax). Trump gutted the agencies issuing them. 3. U.S. military ID card presented with military record of service. 4. Government-issued photo ID showing place of birth: 300M Americans do not have one, and costs up to $50 (poll tax). 5. Non-Enhanced REAL ID driver’s license, state ID, or tribal ID shown in conjunction with a birth certificate (40M lack access to) that matches your last name (which 69M women do not have due to marriage) and other forms of documentation, and which require a cost to obtain (poll tax). If this was truly a voter ID bill, it would provide every eligible voter in the U.S. a voter ID, and provide them at no cost to align with the 24th Amendment — so why doesn’t this bill do that if voter ID is so popular?

Reminder: If voting requires you to spend $165 on a passport, that’s a poll tax. We made those unconstitutional in 1964. The SAVE Act is voter suppression.

At the State of the Union, President Trump declared that the only way Democrats could win in the midterms is if they cheat. Since then, he has attempted to seize ballots, sued 30 states for their voter rolls, dismantled the Election Assistance Commission, and pushed to pass the SAVE Act which would disenfranchise millions of voters across the country. We cannot allow this type of corruption to become normalized.

The House is currently debating a legislative package that includes some pieces of the SAVE Act despite the Senate refusing to pass the bill on numerous occasions prior. Tillis stated that it would nearly impossible to implement the SAVE provisions in the current package even if Congress did choose to pass it because the November elections are right around the corner. There simply is not enough time to do it properly. Trump is out of runway to enact the sweeping changes that he desires. To drive the point home for the hardheaded MAGA senators in the room, Tillis used a whiteboard to outline all of the agencies across the country that would have to be involved with the proposed election measures, including voter ID. It was a daunting display. “I have been trying to explain for nearly a year that the SAVE Act, whether it’s the SAVE Act, the SAVE America Act, the new SAVE legislation that’s being proposed in the House, SAVE goes to Hollywood, SAVE goes to Hawaii, whatever the sequels are, all of them are fundamentally flawed and impossible to implement by this election,” Tillis raged. He explained that rushing to impose these new measures in a hurried, slapdash method would only serve to undermine faith in the elections. Of course, that's exactly the point. Trump wants to inject as much uncertainty as possible into the midterms so that when his party inevitably gets crushed at the ballot box, he can cry foul and dispute the results. “Let’s stop the charade. Let’s stop the distraction,” said Tillis. “Let’s get the government funded, let’s use reconciliation if we need to but let’s not clog it up with another piece of policy airdropped by a member of this Senate or the White House that will undermine this bill, undermine what we need to get done before the election.” Thank you Senator Tillis!
