Tram Rights Forum Kolkata
@TramRightsForum
Tram Rights Forum Kolkata is a people’s movement to protect and modernise the city’s tramways. We see trams as the future of clean, efficient urban transport.

The Kolkata tram is currently operational on only 2 routes. >Gariahat - Esplanade >Esplanade - Shyambazar It is already shut down. These 2 lines are just for symbolism.

PROPAGANDA AGAINST TRAMS - THEY ARE THE REASON FOR TRAFFIC CONGESTION. If this fact was true, then Kolkata would already have been a traffic free city, since trams only run on two routes, that too with a very low frequency.

@TOIIndiaNews 14th May' 2026 @Calcutta_Times Talking point of the town A tram carries far more people per metre of road than private cars, runs on electricity, reduces pollution, improves road safety and supports a more walkable city. Around the world, cities are bringing trams back as modern urban transport. Trams aren’t obsolete. They are underutilised. With barely 10 trams running out of nearly 250, Kolkata risks losing not just heritage, but a sustainable mobility system that can reduce congestion and reconnect neighbourhoods. Revive and modernise routes like Ballygunge–Tollygunge, Esplanade–Shyambazar, BBD Bagh–Sealdah and connect them seamlessly with Metro, buses and walking infrastructure. The future of Kolkata cannot be endless flyovers and more cars. It has to be efficient people movement. @SuvenduWB @SandipGhose @swapan55 #SaveKolkataTrams #TramRevival #WalkableKolkata #PublicTransport #SustainableMobility #ReviveKolkataTrams

Lent my weight to the campaign to keep trams in Kolkata. It is important to ensure that this symbol of the city’s identity is preserved.

@SuvenduWB Electric buses are welcome, but why complete silence on Kolkata trams? If fuel saving, clean transport, and sustainable mobility are priorities, why ignore an existing electric transit system? Routes like 24/29, 36, and even corridors linked with upcoming metro connectivity such as Chingrighata could be reconsidered with modern planning. Will your vision for West Bengal be copy-paste from other states, or a Bengal-specific model integrating tram + metro + electric bus? What is your stand on tram modernisation? #SaveKolkataTram @CPIM_WESTBENGAL @INCWestBengal @BJP4India @BJP4Bengal @MamataOfficial @IamSumanDe @narendramodi @AmitShah @RoopaSpeaks @swapan55 @VaibhavNam63318 @_CTUA_ @pbhakat

PROPAGANDA AGAINST TRAMS - Their tracks cause accident of two-wheelers. There is a protocol to ride a two-wheeler on tram tracks, which unfortunately a huge fraction of bikers don't know. Take utmost care while driving on tram tracks instead of lamenting about it.

PROPAGANDA AGAINST TRAMS - They are not suitable for a densely populated city like Kolkata. It really feels sad to see that a huge fraction of "educated class" believe this dumb statement. Regulate the cars, run trams frequently, and one can see a drastic reduction in traffic.
