Too much NY nativism discourse, nearly everyone's welcome in NYC except for: -people who stand still on the subway stairs to text -people who make a human chain while walking in Midtown -people who put their backpack on a subway seat and refuse to move it so the elderly can sit

This dude lives on the Upper East Side and is claiming to be a crusader protecting New Yorkers against gentrification by his opposition to bike lanes.

@jeremypgordon You can do that anywhere btw. This doesn’t make NYC unique or special.

Yesterday, my wife and I (37) did our adult chores (taxes, cleaning), got lunch and saw a movie (5 stops away on train), walked over the Williamsburg Bridge at sunset, found dinner, walked around some more, took the train home, encountered dozens of strangers and pondered “life”

Can someone explain to us what urban 34-year-olds are doing in the cities that's so fun and special? We remember walking to the grocery store, trying to pack a week's worth of food into a small fridge and freezer, and maybe being robbed blind for mediocre food at a restaurant.

How do people in the suburbs genuinely look forward to Friday night on the couch, Saturday morning at Costco, and call that a weekend? Like you really moved out of the city just to LARP as your parents at 34?

@MichaelShurkin You cannot describe Jewish life in the Muslim world pre 1800s as "as massacred and persecuted." That will just be false.

I'm fascinated by how so many people believe either there was no antisemitism pre-1948, or that people magically stopped hating Jews in 1948 only to begin hating Israelis (but not Jews!), with there being no connection whatsoever.
noah kulwin@nkulw

Contemporary antisemitism in the US is mostly due to the actions of the state of Israel. Hatred of Jews wouldn’t be the problem it is had we not let Israel slap the Star of David on the flag of a nation that ethnically cleansed 750K ppl at the moment of its birth

Sorry, but this is absolutely insane. Do Ukrainians have a right to bomb Russian Orthodox Churches because of the Russia-Ukraine War? Do Nigerian Christians have a right to bomb Mosques because of Islamist massacres in Nigeria? Leftists never apply equal standards across groups.
Jamarrius@YungxJayy

Jewish institutions have to distance themselves from Israel if they want Jews to be safe. You cannot tie your entire religion to a genocidal apartheid state and then be shocked when you are held accountable for their actions, especially if you are contributing to those actions.

@emmma_camp_ What are you basing this on? It doesn’t make common sense. Non-monogamy favors women, who have way more success with actually being non-monogamous on average and plenty of women ask for it. I did.

The dust-up over Lindy West's new memoir brought into public view an uncomfortable truth: Almost always, when a straight couple opens their relationship, it's because the male partner is using the "polyamorous" label to launder his desire to cheat. After all, if you frame monogamy as backward and oppressive, a woman who doesn’t want her spouse to sleep with other people can be shamed into reluctant compliance.

AOC: "If our party can get to a place where everyone can buy into Medicare, I'm gonna take that too. We all need to take that step. And so there's that piece. We need to break up the monopolies that are happening in our health care insurance. The idea that a health insurance can own the PBM can own the drug manufacturer can now own the doctor's clinics. It is outrageous. We need to break them up. We need to take on corporate power. Politicians have to stop taking their money. And we need to also allow everyone to buy into Medicare, ah, and, and have that option to level the playing field for everybody. So, to me, you know, these are just where we can get started."

@speechboy71 @StefanMcGrath People with cars are disproportionally more wealthy. I’m tired of subsidizing car owners in the most walkable city in the country.

Michael A. Cohen (NOT TRUMP’S FORMER FIXER)
Living in NYC isn't a thought experiment. The reality of what is being suggested here is piling yet another financial burden on New Yorkers who already pay some of the highest rents, taxes, and insurance rates in the country. It's a recipe for pushing middle to upper middle class residents out of the city (which is already happening).

@EvanMarinofsky Trump made a joke about he gets impeached for any perceived mistake. It really had nothing to do with the women’s hockey team per se but about how his enemies find fault with everything he does or says. And here you are feeding right into that, Jeremy, making Trump’s point.

the “people are homeless because they refuse housing” line is so infuriating bc ut comes from a real place, but what people are actually refusing is parternalistic control. People do want housing, they just don’t want curfews, bureaucratic bullshit, sobriety requirements, etc.

None of us get to have it all but the middle class have to listen to a lot of rules to make sure they can cover their own mortgage & feed their kids, and so don’t have a lot of empathy for ppl who are dependent on the state but want a rule free life.

@FlyinMackenzie @sarahwaters420 Having and enforcing “paternalistic” rules should reduce/eliminate sexual assaults. That’s the entire point.

@sarahwaters420 Having their belongings thrown out, being sexually assaulted in shelters, etc. People really don't understand the extent of coercive control in all of these "options" they think the homeless have.
