Under its convening mandate, IGAD has brought together women parliamentarians and leadership, duty bearers & experts from across the region in Machakos, Kenya for a Regional Dialogue on Gender, Land and Climate Resilience. Headline by Hon Irene Mayaka, Chairperson of the Economic Development Committee, representing the Deputy Speaker of Parliament- Republic of Kenya and Dr Juliana Mutua, representing the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, the meeting focuses on the challenges and opportunities in women land ownership as they manage climate related and other resilience challenges. ‘Over 70% of the food in Africa is produced by women; yet they own less than 20% of the farmland. We have enough policies, protocols, and treaties on the books on women empowerment. The challenge is implementation and enforcement’. A Call for Action.

Sometimes we get lost in statistics and forget the faces behind the numbers. We must stop blaming the girls. You can’t ask her why her father came to her room; Why her uncle raped her; Why her teacher abused his power. You can’t ask her why she got pregnant. - Hon. On Tuesday, we joined @UWOPA and Parliament’s Legal Drafts Team members in a meeting to harmonize stakeholder views on the Marriage Bill, 2024. This meeting aimed to inform the final report that will be presented to the Joint Committees on Gender and Legal Affairs which is currently scrutinizing the Bill ahead of its presentation in Parliament. This activity is supported by the @Stand4herlandUg as part of its broader mission to enhance women’s access to land justice by facilitating and leading policy review consultations on laws and polices like the Marriage Bill that have a bearing on women’s land and property rights.

I today launched the Women in Agribusiness Week (WAW) at KCCA Hall with a call on government to support women engaged in agriculture. Only 6% of the women own land in Uganda a key factor in agribusiness. Access to credit still remains a challenge since most women lack collateral.
