NGOs play an indispensable role in every country - something Czechia knows from its own experience. We stand with Georgian civil society and urge the Georgian government to halt investigations and release the frozen financial resources. 🇬🇪

#Georgia: Freezing the bank accounts of seven leading NGOs – including organisations focusing on women’s rights like @UnionSapari and @SjcCenter – is an assault on justice, equality, and human rights values. Equality Now stands in solidarity with them. bit.ly/4g3px79

We would like to express our full solidarity and support to Civil Society Foundation, the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED), Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI), Democracy Defenders, Georgian Democracy Initiative (GDI), Sapari, and Social Justice Center. The punitive measures taken against Georgian non-governmental organizations, resembling those of the Russian authorities, demonstrate that Ivanishvili’s government is determined to completely eliminate critical voices and pro-European groups in Georgia. All of this is happening at a time when Ivanishvili’s government has been given a concrete deadline by Europe to respond to whether they wish to preserve visa-free travel for the Georgian people. Through such actions, Ivanishvili’s government once again signals to the European Union that it has no interest in maintaining visa-free travel for Georgia. Creating such obstacles for Georgian NGOs, which defend the rights and interests of the Georgian population, also shows that the ruling party’s goal is to leave Georgian citizens without any assistance against the government’s repressive actions. By shutting down these organizations, thousands of people are being deprived of free legal aid and other essential services. We stand by your side, united in our shared aspiration for a free, fair, and democratic Georgia.

Yesterday, our accounts were frozen — part of growing repressions and an attempt to silence us, to stop NGOs from helping the people of Georgia. Today, 67 Georgian organizations, with more joining stand with us in solidarity. 💙 Together, we cannot be silenced. ✊

Yesterday, our accounts were frozen by court order at the Prosecutor’s request. Today we share good news: CEDAW has admitted our case & requested the State refrain from disclosing our beneficiary's data to any third party, including the Anti-Corruption Bureau. ✊

“Providing legal aid to protestors detained by the Georgian Dream government is not a crime. Nor is it ‘sabotage against the state.’ I continue to stand with the Georgian people and members of civil society who seek to preserve Georgia’s democracy.” -@SenatorShaheen

The space is shrinking in Georgia for civil society. Authorities have frozen the accounts of 7 NGOs and opened a criminal case for “sabotage,” alleging they funded protective gear for protesters. Unlike previous cases, this could lead to the arrest of the NGO's leaders 1/3

The Kremlin-funded and Putin-supported crackdown on democracy in Georgia continues. Today the bank accounts of seven civil society organisations were frozen in a deliberate attempt to dismantle the democratic movement. Unacceptable, unjust and cowardly. All eyes on Georgia!

🔴 The #Tbilisi City Court has granted the Prosecutor’s Office’s motion to freeze the bank accounts of 7 CSOs as part of a sabotage investigation. ❌ Authorities allege the groups bought gas masks, goggles, respirators, masks & pepper spray for protesters. #RepressionInGeorgia
