@feulaflamme My school had mandatory French class from 4th grade to 8th grade. And in grade 9 your choice was French or Ojibwe. Some parts of Canada are definitely forcing French on people lol

@ziyaloveskpop @feulaflamme It's very different for Anglophones in Quebec, where we actually *are* forced to learn French from kindergarten on... but I consider being bilingual an advantage! (I do wish they did a better job of teaching French in English schools, focusing more on Quebec French though)

@JakeLandauTO The bilingualism rates among Quebec Anglophones are still behind us Francophones outside Quebec. I'm shocked sometimes at how little effort the Montreal anglophones, in particular, put in trying to learn a language they would theoretically use daily.

@gldngirlgadfly @redroomrantings No one has made it about hated of anglos (or possibly a very small minority have), it is about the head of a company, living in Quebec, not being able to address the francophone family of an employee who died tragically in their own language... it would be the same thing reversed

@redroomrantings But we don’t. You don’t hear much French in Vancouver, and we’ve just seen a small minority or narrow-minded people make a tragedy where two people, died all about their hatred of English speakers.

I find as I grow older I am far more sensitive to the way that some people talk about the French language in the rest of Canada, referring to it as a burden and some kind of useless accommodation. We are so lucky to live in a bilingual country.

@DimitrisSoudas As an Anglophone Quebecer I have to agree... it's one thing for an Anglophone to refuse to learn French (I don't see any advantage not to but I can definitely understand it as a form of protest) but if you're the CEO of a major company you should at least be minimally bilingual

In the case of Air Canada’s CEO, we have now been waiting for twenty years. He lives in Quebec. His wife is francophone. He leads a company that is subject to the Official Languages Act. Five years ago, in Montreal, he delivered a speech entirely in English and promised he would learn French. More than 400 hours of tutoring later, he is still at “bonjour” and “merci.” I believe we have been patient. Very patient. But at some point, respect for a language, for the law, and for the country cannot be optional. It must be real, concrete, and upheld.
