This is like saying we can't do anything about the dangerous wild animal roaming around because there isn't a zoo nearby. The mistake you are making in your argument is that you are effectively leaving good men (who just want to be left alone and live their lives) with no other option than to seriously consider vigilante justice to protect those they love. We don't need behavioral health infrastructure. We need dangerous criminals off the streets.

Here’s the thing: everyone knows immigration policy had nothing to do with Ms. Minter’s death. Jalloh could not be held lawfully by ICE because of Sierra Leone’s policies for which they are now being sanctioned. Jalloh’s charges were usually “dropped” b/c witnesses didn’t come to court. And ultimately the danger he posed arose out of an appalling lack of behavioral health services that could have massively mitigated the risk. If you disagree with the last point, you just might be a sociopath. Everyone involved in the justice system at any level knows how critical a functioning behavioral health infrastructure is to community safety. Everyone. Everyone everywhere—even the cops in your local MAGA-aligned police department.

@NickMinock This also makes it extra hard on dyslexic kids, who struggle enough with their own language. Imagine being dyslexic and having to also hear an assistant repeating instruction in a different language.

Why is a soon to be 19-year-old illegal immigrant man a junior at Fairfax High School (the one accused of sexually assaulting more than a dozen girls)? Virginia law says "school boards may accept and provide programs for students for whom English is a second language who entered school in Virginia for the first time after reaching their twelfth birthday, and who have not reached 22 years of age on or before August 1 of the school year." Fairfax County Public Schools says it has over 35,000 English learner students, which is 20% of the student population. According to the school districts: English learners make up about 14% of the student population in Loudoun County Public Schools, 20% of students are English learners in Arlington Public Schools, 22% of students are English learners in Prince William County Public Schools, and 38% of students are English learners in Alexandria City Public Schools. There has been a sharp increase in these students in Stafford and Spotsylvania County Public schools. The cost of English language instruction costs local school districts hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Superintendents in Northern Virginia have said they need more tax money for their school systems even though enrollment is flat or declining because it’s more expensive to educate an English language learner student. This has resulted in higher local taxes over the years in many Virginia jurisdictions. Federal law requires public schools to educate non-English speaking students, according to the NCELA. Parents and teachers I’ve spoken to over the years tell me that the large number of English learners in public schools is also impacting the quality of education English speaking students are getting, because many teachers have to interrupt instruction to spend time with the English learners to help them understand the material. Some teachers have told me that many of the English learners in their classes can speak Spanish, but they cannot write or read in Spanish, which makes teaching and testing these kids even more difficult.
