I have some big personal news: Detailed has been acquired by Ahrefs. 🎉 I'm also super excited to be joining the company to work on marketing and product. A few months ago Tim Soulo invited me to speak at their upcoming conference in San Diego, Ahrefs Evolve. I brought up an idea I hinted at on the Ahrefs podcast last year, and 24 hours later we were on a call about me potentially joining the company. If you follow me you'll know I'm obsessed with all things strategy and research in this space - and more importantly, doing the work - so to get to do that on a much bigger scale is genuinely a dream of mine. The Detailed SEO Extension and all current features will remain free. In five years it has grown to 450,000+ weekly users, which I'm incredibly grateful for. We'll add new features at some point, while keeping in place what's already there. Detailed will remain a separate brand and I'll continue to personally update relevant projects there. My focus now is on product and tool ideas, research reports, marketing insights and everything actionable we can share to help grow your business. Finally, a HUGE thanks to everyone who has read and shared my work over the years for this to even be a possibility. 🙏 I'm really excited for what's next.

@ViperChill Any chance you’ll eventually open the API for the $29/mo Starter plan? Even a small number of requests per month would be immense value!

Big news: Ahrefs just massively increased API limits (at no extra cost). 🥳 As Ahrefs grows in this AI era, we're opening up more data to power your marketing. Increased API limits have been one of the top requests over the past few months, so I'm excited to be sharing this news. Changes depend on your account level, but as an example, Standard plans now get 2.67x more credits and up to 10x more rows per request. Over the next few weeks I'm going to be sharing some of the unique tools and workflows Ahrefs powers for my own work. If you have any cool use cases of your own, I would love to hear those as well. 🙌

@waterguy Hey Bill, Could you please clarify what you mean by "the account changed?". I've only seen credits increase (there was another increase before this one, on Lite plans) so not totally following. Happy to look into it if I can.

@ViperChill I originally had credits as part of my account but the account changed and I unknowingly lost them. Using Data4SEO now.

@ViperChill My sentiment towards @ahrefs has become way more positive over the last year or so. Seems to be much more user-forward than the direction it was trending in for a while. Props!

@ViperChill I was just looking into this a few weeks ago and it was like $1k a month or something wild to get API access. Looks like its part of $129 plan now? Before I go ripping stuff out please confirm :)

Generally prefer not to comment on others, but the Ahrefs API is super comprehensive. Also, if there's a report you like in the standard UI, there you'll find quick links to API calls & query examples. This may sound lazy, but these days I would point your AI-assistant of choice at docs.ahrefs.com and ask if it can achieve what you're looking to do with it 🙏

@ViperChill In terms how accessible this API is for the kind of data it gives users access to, how does it compare to Dataforseo in your opinion ?

@ViperChill I gave API access to my openclaw so when reviewing possible link opportunities for a campaign it can do the 'boring stuff' like look for sites ranking for dodgy keywords, check traffic trends, look for dodgy outbound links etc and come up with a recommended shortlist.

@ViperChill We saw the same thing. All of our LLM leads were from Claude last month. 6 months ago, it was all ChatGPT

I predicted Ahrefs sign-ups attributed to Claude would double in March. They almost quadrupled (and have increased again in April). From a business POV, I've been spending more time than usual with their API and analyzing responses and sources. (While the numbers are low, some people share the prompt angles that inspired them to check out Ahrefs). From a personal POV, I use Claude & Google's AI Mode daily, but almost never look at ChatGPT anymore. AI referrals only account for a small % of sign-ups, but it's nice to see the channel continue to grow. As I've said before, I'm aware that self-attribution data isn't perfect. It’s affected by recency and recall bias, and it's not easy to account for every variation and typo. It's also far from the only data source I look at, but possibly the most fun. Of course, none of this is to “show off”. I understand Claude is growing fast, so we're benefiting from that, as are many other companies I've heard from. I report on how AI is impacting other companies' marketing, so I think it's only fair to share what's happening at Ahrefs. At least now and then. Hopefully it's interesting! 🙌 P.S. "Overall" in the chart also counts some other platforms, such as Grok.

@ViperChill Any sense how the quality of sign ups compares across channels (eg search vs ai) and then across the various ai tools? Like is a claude user a higher quality oppty or is it similar across the board for ai tools? Understand if you cant share tho.

I would prefer not to say until I've checked all channels in full — just to be accurate — but I will see if I can do a proper update here. It's very easy to see mentions of Google vs ChatGPT, but then other platforms have quite a few misspellings to account for, multiple sources mentioned per response (which I avoid), and a few other things. Was quite manual the last time I did this. I've mostly automated the AI side, but not all channels.

Good question! For the first part, I'm attaching the numbers from 2025. Things have changed since then, but this should give a good sense of the overall. (Should also add that only a subset of sign-ups share specifics on where they heard about Ahrefs). I'll see if I can do a proper follow-up on the graphic. Thanks for the idea 🙏

@ViperChill Curious on how that compares to "traditional" seo (google, bing, etc). Is the AI slice of the pie getting bigger for you guys?
