Good to see the federal government invoke international law in condemning Trump’s genocidal threats. It raises the question why it did not apply the same standard to President Herzog during his recent visit to Australia. After all, Herzog’s statements were cited by the ICJ.

“We have been in Iran for more than 2500 years. We/Jews of Iran, along with many of our fellow Iranians, have experienced many historical events, the ups and downs of this country is in our genes, it’s in our blood stream.
For me the destruction of this site/synagogue, although I have personal connection to it, is just as sad/no different from all the other destruction happening across our country.”

Nasrin Sotoudeh is known for her immense courage and integrity. Along with her husband Reza Khandan, currently in Evin, she has been subjected to more than a decade of harassment and wrongful imprisonment by the regime for her principled defence of human rights. Nasrin, Reza and their two children have paid an incredibly high price for their advocacy. They should be released immediately.

Terrible news from Tehran: I just heard that the Iranian authorities today arrested the great human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh. It's not known where she has been taken. Nasrin has been mentioned as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize for her unflinching courage and moral leadership. I hope thought leaders worldwide will call on the Iranian authorities to release this brave woman who represents the best of Iran. Her husband, Reza Khandan, is already in prison serving a sentence for advocating for women's rights. Iran should release them -- and all political prisoners. It was wrong for the Shah to imprison people for peaceful expression of political views, and it's wrong for the Islamic Republic to do so today.
