HE Penda Naanda chaired a side-event of the UN Palestine Committee on the margins of CSW-70, calling for justice and accountability for Palestinian Women and Girls, and the promotion of their rights, including their inalienable right to self-determination, freedom and dignity.

Women Human Rights Defenders working in authoritarian and post-war contexts experience harm that extends far beyond physical violence or legal violations. Surveillance, criminalisation, displacement, stigma, and prolonged insecurity create deep psychosocial and collective impacts. Yet justice frameworks continue to centre institutional and legal responses alone. This session asks a critical question: What would justice look like if it were designed by #WHRDs — for WHRDs? The New York convening will be a facilitated working session where we will share emerging lessons and begin shaping this framework together. 🌍 Not in New York? You can still shape the conversation. Did you know Burundian women were advancing Women, Peace & Security before #UNSCR1325 was formally adopted globally in 2000❓ 🔥 In 1997, during Burundi’s inter-ethnic civil war, women were excluded from national peace negotiations. Instead of accepting the margins, they organized, mobilized, and demanded a place at the table. ✊🏾With visionary leaders like @MarieLouiseBaricako of Mouvement Inamahoro, Burundian women secured space in the Arusha peace process — initially as observers — advocating for women’s inclusion at every step. 🌍 By the time #UNSCR1325 came into force, Burundian women were not being introduced to the WPS agenda — they were already implementing it. 📊 Today, Burundi is implementing its 3rd National Action Plan (#NAP) on #WPS and has adopted a 30% constitutional quota for women’s representation.
