I’m deeply saddened to announce the passing of my father, Al Sharpton, Sr. Our relationship was complicated, but he was still my father. Over the past 18 years, I was able to work through my pain and feelings of abandonment, and we built a relationship that meant a lot to me. Born and raised in Jim Crow Florida, he later came to NYC and became a successful entrepreneur. Though his weaknesses may have cost him, he instilled in my sister and me (and later our other siblings) a mentality of independence and self-pride. I've learned from my own mistakes and from his. May my Daddy rest in peace.

Jamaica was spared the worst of Hurricane Beryl, but the damage is still significant. During an interview with CNN this morning, I provided a preliminary assessment of the damage that occurred overnight. As we begin to put the pieces back together, I encourage Jamaicans to prioritize their safety and support one another. With our collective strength and resilience, we will recover and emerge stronger than before.

Sometimes, I start my lab meetings with a world view of “things”. It helps to provide a place where it’s clear science is second to sanity, inclusion, respect, etc. I don’t even have to words to begin lab meeting next Monday, My lab is at Harvard. Btw.
