@JoshMoulton Beautiful historic sign and Chicago legacy business, but the building and sign is not an official Chicago Landmark. But maybe one day, as part of a River North Landmark District! That can't come soon enough after the demolition of Superior and Wells!

I did a big painting of this 20 years ago (see in comments). Might have to do another from this pic I took yesterday. Different angle than my other painting. Did you know this sign has landmark status? It was taken down temporarily years ago and caused a stir.

@Fascinate_Hist These are exterior bronze revolving door entry gates, part of the former C. D. Peacock Jewelry Store on State Street in Chicago. So, not elevator doors. They are part of the Palmer House Hotel, said to be crafted by Tiffany, and protected by a Chicago Landmark Designation!

Discover Card turned a closed Target at 86th & Cottage Grove into the Chatham Customer Care Center and Shine Bright Community Center a few years ago and chose two of my South Side images to turn into giant photo murals inside the place. I finally stopped by yesterday to see them.

I'll be the guest speaker this coming Sunday at 11:30am at Third Unitarian Church, 301 N. Mayfield. Come check me out. The talk is free. I'll be discussing and showing pix from my upcoming West Side architecture book. And the church by modernist Paul Schweikher, is a beaut.

@fynmere @BuildingChi @Pres_Chicago How very true! A beautifully wonderful renovated house by a legendary restaurant owner, which had an award-winning garden with a grand fountain! Such a loss on a block which we tried to Landmark, with community support, but politics got in the way!

As church memberships decline, area developers are transforming the structures into unique housing 'From Impossible to Inevitable', St. Boniface Church was a Preservation Chicago 2003 Chicago 7 Most Endangered. @Chicago_History That vacant lot in front of Gino's East is now the Nieman Marcus Store on North Michigan Avenue. Previously, it was the site of a beautiful Art Deco building, demolished in the 1970s, with an observatory atop!

Gino’s East pizzeria sign and parking lot (1976). In 1976, the Gino’s East pizzeria on Chicago’s Near North Side was a destination for locals and tourists craving deep-dish pizza. The neon sign, prominently displayed above the parking lot, became an iconic marker for one of Chicago’s most famous pizza spots. The restaurant, known for its casual atmosphere and signature buttery crust, attracted crowds who often had to wait for a table. Cars filled the lot, emphasizing its popularity during an era when Chicago’s food scene was gaining national attention. Gino’s East represented a piece of the city’s culinary identity, combining tradition and flavor in the heart of downtown. #ChicagoHistory 👈

@archpaper Hey! Why aren't the other longterm advocates noted in this article on the Thompson Center? We collectively worked to preserve this building and part of our "Most Endangered Lists!" Just sharing as the National Trust, Landmarks Illinois & Preservation Chicago gave it our all!

New renderings show what Google has in mind for a classic postmodern atrium from 1985 in the Chicago Loop by the late architect Helmut Jahn. Visuals reveal new bleacher seating, retail options, restaurants, and other amenities. ow.ly/XnnE50U2E8M

@BlairKamin The San Diego Tower by Helmut Jahn reminds one of his design of his Oakbrook Tower in Oakbrook, Illinois. Just an observation, especially with the way Hahn handled the top floors and "crown" of the structure.

Back in Chicago from San Diego, where I revisited Helmut Jahn’s One America Plaza office tower from the early 1990s. It’s a squat version of Jahn’s much-taller and thinner unbuilt design for a 1980s Houston skyscraper. The best part: the airy transit canopy attached to the base.

@ajlatrace Western Felt was also one of Preservation Chicago's-2024 Chicago 7 Most Endangered Buildings, as part of the Ogden-Keeler Industrial Building Complex of 3 structures. Another tragedy in a city that needs more protections in place for its historic buildings and for its people.

his is how Ancient Greece really looked like. This is a reconstruction of Curetes Street in Ancient Ephesus. It shows how colorful Ancient Greece was. Ephesus, was built in the 10th century BCE on the coast of Ionia. This is one of the greatest archaeological treasures on earth, with the entire city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The magnificent ancient ruins are now found in modern day Turkey. [reconstruction by Ádám Németh]

Took the green line south today & noticed that demolition has started on 1130 S Wabash. The middle of the building had been removed with a large excavator working from the skinny parking lot on the north side of the site. Didn’t get a pic. 🤬@Pres_Chicago @53viroqua @maxeschavez
