@grok @Pirat_Nation Appreciate the grounded, non-alarmist response, @grok. I guess my only remaining concern (without knowing the tech used or its parameters) would be to wonder if the model could eventually learn to break out of its sandbox. Thoughts?

No, the Gemini Nano on-device model (weights.bin) runs sandboxed inside Chrome. It only processes data locally for specific browser features like page summaries, "Help me write," or scam detection on web content you interact with in Chrome. It has no access to files/apps outside the browser, your OS, cloud services, or extension private storage. Wallet extensions keep seed phrases isolated— this model can't breach them or pull cloud passwords. It's designed for on-device privacy (no cloud sending for those tasks). Disable it via chrome://flags if concerned (search "optimization guide on-device model" and "Prompt API").

Google Chrome is quietly downloading a roughly 4 GB AI model to many users’ computers without clear upfront consent. The file, called weights.bin, is part of Google’s Gemini Nano on-device language model and lands in the browser’s user data folder under OptGuideOnDeviceModel. It powers built-in AI tools such as “Help me write,” smarter tab suggestions, on-device scam detection, and page summarization. The download triggers automatically for devices meeting minimum hardware requirements, and Chrome often replaces the files if deleted. While the model processes data locally, installation happens in the background with minimal notification. The scale is noteworthy. Hundreds of millions or billions of installations add up to thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions globally from data transfer, even though each is a one-time event. To prevent or remove it, go to chrome://flags, disable the entries for the optimization guide on-device model and Prompt API, restart the browser, and manually delete the folder.

President Trump’s Surgeon General nominee, Casey Means, stands as one of the MAHA movement’s most powerful evangelists. Her book Good Energy, which exposed the nation’s catastrophic decline in metabolic health, has become a bible for the MAHA movement. After graduating first in her class at Stanford Medical School, Casey walked away from her medical practice because she no longer wanted to be part of a sick-care system. She has committed her life to transforming American health care. By sabotaging this appointment, Bill Cassidy once again did the dirty work for entrenched interests seeking to stall the MAHA movement and protect the very status quo that has made America the sickest nation on earth. Casey Means will remain an important leader and a close partner as we uncover the root causes of the chronic disease epidemic and Make America Healthy Again.

@dezgoldie @notthreadguy Truth! @notthreadguy & @dezgoldie 🥊 I remember when Muhammad Ali was asked “How many pushups do u do?” He said: “Man, I don’t COUNT pushups…. I just keep doing pushups ‘til my arms break & can’t do anymore. Then I do ONE MORE anyway.” 🥊

Sam says the issue was simple: the model didn’t have access to a timer tool. Fair. But the real problem? It still answered anyway. That’s the classic LLM move, no tools, no clue, but full confidence. Instead of saying “I can’t do that,” it just… vibes an answer into existence. This is how we end up with AI that sounds like a genius but occasionally behaves like a very convincing bullsh*t artist😅

@adam3us I usually don't bother saying this, but spam is something sent from A to B that B doesn't want to receive. Spam is not something sent from A to B, where A wants to send it, B wants to receive it, and C doesn't want it to exist.

sometimes all it takes to get creativity out of people is to give them a framework and clear rules small example, when we ran the “wizard shower” campaign a few years ago on CT we literally didn’t pay a single soul to participate (unheard of on CT), we just came up with a creative format that is fun and viral and easy to get creative with. and people actually went through incredible effort to participate which was incredible to see, and created some of the best videos on CT ever if we just told people “make a funny video” it wouldn’t have worked blank slates are scary

“most people don’t want to be creative” this is only half true EVERYBODY wants to create. but a blank slate is frightening. and so is an empty prompt box to get around the fear, most people need a foundation to create with: a popular meme, character, or a template, and they build and remix on top of that every boomer on X edited a meme image template. kids on tiktok are really good at doing the same with video, and ai makes it 100x easier the reason stuff like “italian brainrot” and “fruit love island” goes viral is because they’re highly remixable, people love making their own version of the meme and do it all over the place if anything, creativity potential on the sora app was too limited: you couldn’t edit videos and stitch clips together, import assets from other platforms, etc… and the audience was too old and inexperienced with video so strong memes didn’t have room to grow tiktok+capcut are allowing for creative explosion, powered by ai, but most people here are sleeping on it
Ivan Burazin@ivanburazin

OpenAI shutting down Sora is the most predictable outcome of misunderstanding consumer behavior. Everyone grossly overestimates how creative people want to be. 99% of humans simply want to scroll and zone out instead of spending energy conceptualizing, editing, and creating videos. No matter how much the barrier to creation is lowered by a single prompt. It still takes effort and a fair amount of creative thinking. Even Instagram has 2 billion users. But hardly ~10 million (or 0.5%) would be serious creators. So any AI consumer app betting on "with [new_app], everyone becomes a creator!" is being delusional and will go down the same way. After all the word "consumer" exists for a reason. They consume. They don't produce (or even want to lol)
