It's actually very old! The book "On Suicide" by Emile Durkheim probably officially "started the -ology" part of it in the late 1800s. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death of young people in Canada and kills about 800k people worldwide. Studying it to me is as natural as studying pediatric cancer!
