She was on her own. No backup. No time to think. 💙
When PC Rhona Adams arrived at a McDonald’s in Bradford last June, she was single-crewed and expecting to check on a vulnerable woman in distress. What she walked into was something else entirely.
The woman had locked herself in the disabled toilet, poured oil over herself, and set herself on fire.
Without hesitation, PC Adams opened the door, was met with flames and screaming, and ran in anyway. She used her bare hands to smother the fire, held the woman tightly to stop her from moving, and directed restaurant staff to bring her a fire extinguisher, which she used to put out the rest of the blaze. She then provided first aid and kept the woman calm until paramedics arrived.
Thanks to her actions, the woman survived with only first and second degree burns.
Rhona’s just been awarded the King’s Commendation for Bravery, and she was a nominee at this year’s National Police Bravery Awards.
