@VenningGeorge @nessimmersion @TypeForVictory I understand what you’re saying but the public sector cannot *currently* build houses. If the government wanted them to do that, it would take years to build the capacity and expertise. Until then, we should be supporting private developers

The slum clearances of the 20th century were mostly of shoddy 19th century housing built to accommodate the urban poor of the industrial revolution. 📣 Southwark Council welcomes news that plans by Berkeley Homes for the Aylesham Centre have been rejected. Berkeley Homes proposed to build 867 homes, including 77 affordable homes, at the site in Peckham alongside retail, leisure and commercial space. Today a planning inspector has dismissed an appeal by Berkeley Homes, saying “benefits do not outweigh the harm to the relevant designated heritage assets important to the area”. Cllr Sarah King, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “This is a great day for Peckham and we welcome the planning inspector’s decision to dismiss Berkeley Homes’s appeal for the Aylesham Centre. “I’d like to personally thank the community who spoke loud and clearly about their concerns. “We shared those concerns and strongly argued at the public inquiry that the scheme was poorly designed and our position has been vindicated. “We will read the appeal in detail and carefully consider our next steps.”

@WhyAlwaysMoe_ @TypeForVictory Actually, the public sector did have the capacity to build. And when it did, we built loads, massively improved quality, as well as security of tenure and a host of other things. Consider what working class housing was like in 1920 Vs 1960.

@VenningGeorge @TypeForVictory If you don’t incentivise developers to build homes, no one will build them and we will be stuck in a housing crisis. The public sector does not have the ability to build homes.

@danazzo3 The average graduate starts on £33k/yr. With the 3% pay rise every year, they’d be on £71K after 30 years. The average debt is £50K. In that time they would repay £51,500. That’s it. After 30 years no more repayments. Even if they’d borrowed more, they’d still only pay £51,500.

@linmeitalks In 2017, 60% of suspects arrested for violent crimes in the Johannesburg area were illegal immigrants. The way they’re going about it is wrong, but South African frustration with illegal immigrants is understandable.

Anthropic is hiring a for a role in London that will be paid up to £630k A YEAR. This excludes stock options. For a long time the UK has been seen a location for cheap offshore talent. There's nothing cheap about a 7-figure package for a researcher (the role is Research Engineer, Science of Scaling). I've been celebrating the recent OpenAI and Anthropic expansions in London. However, in reality, they may end up pricing out, or poaching talent from, some of the capital's home grown companies. Great article in @thetimes from @kprescott all about this linked below

The @The_RHS revealed in Greening Grey Britain that between 2005 and 2015, an additional 3 million front gardens were paved over. This has huge implications for overheating, flooding, and biodiversity loss. Homeowners should be mandated to retain 50% 'natural' garden space.
