I appreciated the opportunity to represent @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and @SecRubio at the NATO Ministerial Meeting in Brussels. I emphasized what should be obvious: Europe must take primary responsibility for its own security. Successive US Administrations have been saying this in one form or another pretty much my whole life—look up the 1969 “Nixon doctrine”—but our Administration means what it says. Enjoyed cordial and frank discussions with @SecGenNATO and many of the ministers.

AFGHAN TERRORIST ARRESTED TODAY JUST MILES FROM D.C. CAME IN UNDER BIDEN. Today the heroes of @ICEgov arrested Jaan Shah Safi, an unvetted Afghan national who provided support to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria-Khorasan (ISIS-K). He also provided weapons to his father who is a commander of a militia group in Afghanistan. The Biden administration created one of the worst national security crises in American history. Biden let into our country nearly 190,000 unvetted Afghan aliens — only determining who they were and their intentions when they were already on American soil. President Trump has been working every day since January 20 to clean up this unmitigated national security crisis.

Any Ukraine-Russia peace plan has to:
1) Stop the killing while preserving Ukrainian sovereignty.
2) Be acceptable to both Russia and Ukraine.
3) Maximize the chances the war doesn't restart.
Every criticism of the peace framework the administration is working on either misunderstands the framework or misstates some critical reality on the ground.
There is a fantasy that if we just give more money, more weapons, or more sanctions, victory is at hand. Peace won't be made by failed diplomats or politicians living in a fantasy land. It might be made by smart people living in the real world.

I just returned from meeting with our counterterrorism partners in Iraq & Syria who are continuing the fight against ISIS, Al-Qaeda and Iranian proxies.
Incredible to see the progress that has been made & our partners commitment to our fight against terrorism.
It was personally very special for me to visit with the Iraqi Special Forces, Counter Terrorism Service. My ODA helped form them in 2003, then I fought alongside them in Baghdad, Fallujah, Mosul & everywhere between. They are incredible warriors.

1 year ago we lost an American hero, my brother in law, Master SGT Mike Smith.
Mike was an amazing man, we miss him deeply. Live a life worthy of the sacrifices made by our warriors.

Yesterday we celebrated the life, service & love of my brother in law Mike Smith, Master SGT (Ret) USMC. Mike enlisted in the Marines following the attacks on 9/11 & Shannon enlisted in the Navy. Like so many in our generation, Mike & Shannon wanted to do their part for our nation following 9/11. Mike served at the tip of the spear as an Explosives Ordinance Disposal technician for Marine Recon & MARSOC. Mike earned a Bronze Star for Valor in Afghanistan for saving the lives of his Marine Recon team when they were ambushed, Mike fought the enemy, rendered aid to his wounded Marines & safely disposed of IEDs, clearing an escape route for his entire team. Marines don’t give out awards easily, getting BSM w/V from Marine Recon is a high honor. EOD is as dangerous as it gets, and takes certain type of crazy to seek out IEDs, mines & explosives designed to kill us. I was always grateful when we had EOD with us. Mike survived the war, only to be taken by cancer immediately after retiring. The cancer stalking our generation of warriors is evil, fast & mercilessly, get your screenings. Mike was larger than life, yesterday his brothers did a great job of sharing so many stories of Mike’s antics, his valor & most importantly, his love. Love for his brothers, family & nation. There are no words to describe the pain of his loss & the pain that his parents & sister are enduring. I don’t know why this happened but I do know we’ll see Mike & Shannon again, and they are together now. Now it’s on us to live a life worthy of their sacrifice.
