There is nothing wrong if Kannadigas ask people who are settling in Karnataka for the long term to learn Kannada. After all, Karnataka itself was formed on the basis of the Kannada language. The States Reorganization Act, which came into effect on 1 November 1956, was when the Government of India officially reorganized states along linguistic lines. By doing so, the government recognized Karnataka as the land of Kannada. So if someone chooses to make this state their home, it’s perfectly logical and respectful to learn the language that defines its identity.
