📢 Malta’s spring #hunting season 2024 for the red-listed #TurtleDove is now officially open ‼️ 🕊 As of today (17 April), Turtle-doves can now be hunted with an overall bag limit of 1,500 birds as permitted by law following the publication of yesterday’s legal notice by the @MaltaGov. Despite the recognised Vulnerable status by the @IUCNRedList, the Maltese Courts once again this year turned down a request for a Warrant of Prohibitory Injunction by BirdLife Malta to stop the government from accepting the ORNIS Committee’s recommendation to apply the derogation. A call for a moratorium made by BirdLife Malta was also rejected. 🗓️ This means that the season is now open for both Common Quail and European Turtle-dove, and will run until 30 April. A total of 7,969 hunters are permitted to hunt from Monday to Sunday from two hours before sunrise until 12pm. 👮 As we did since the start of the #Quail hunting season on 10 April, we will continue monitoring illegalities in the countryside through our #SpringWatch camp as Turtle-dove migration is expected to peak in the coming days, as these birds cross from North Africa to Europe to breed. This is precisely why BirdLife Malta is against spring hunting: killing birds when they are on their way to breed goes against the most basic principle of conservation! ℹ️ For more details about this year’s spring hunting season, and a step-by-step guide on how to report illegal hunting to the police, visit the hunting section on our website at bit.ly/BLMhunting. 📱 Should you encounter any illegal hunting or find a shot injured bird you may report to police on 119 asking for the Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) or directly to us on 2134 7645 (office hours) or 7925 5697 (outside office hours). #ItWasGoingToBreed #WhichDoYouPrefer @EU_Commission @EUCourtPress @EU_ENV @VSinkevicius @BirdLifeEurope @BirdLife_News @IUCN

Unbelievable advert in our local magazine NNPulse Northampton by Prestige Lawns using terms such as ‘promoting biodiversity’, ‘sustainable & attractive environment for both humans and wildlife to enjoy’, @Shitlawns . Surely this kind of promotion is illegal - or contra to TS?!
