Protestants love quoting Jerome to argue against the deuterocanonical books. They never finish the story. Yes, Jerome initially questioned whether Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, and 1 & 2 Maccabees belonged in the canon. He preferred the shorter Hebrew collection. But here's what happened next. Jerome translated every single one of those books in the Vulgate. All of them. Carefully. Faithfully. Why? Because the Church told him to. In his preface to the Books of Solomon, Jerome acknowledged the Church's usage of these texts. In his preface to Judith, he wrote that the Council of Nicaea "is considered to have counted this book among the number of the Sacred Scriptures." He didn't plant a flag. He didn't write 95 theses. He didn't start the "Jeromean Reformed Church of Bethlehem." He submitted. The greatest Scripture scholar of the ancient world, the man who spent decades mastering Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic, who lived in a cave translating the Bible for years on end, looked at his own private judgment and said: the Church's authority is higher than mine. That's the difference between Catholic humility and Protestant rebellion. Jerome had more scholarly credentials than every Reformer combined. And he still bent the knee to the Church. What does it say when modern Protestants claim Jerome as their ally while doing the exact opposite of what Jerome did?

PREDICTION: This is just a best educated guess based on trends and projections. I say Catholics will outnumber Evangelicals in the U.S. well before 2050. Likewise, I say Catholics will outnumber all other Christian denominations combined by 2100.

@TheStaad Wait until they are introduced to the Latin Mass. They just need to know they don’t need to know Latin. I mean, try to learn it as you go, but it’s not necessary to know Latin to attend the Latin mass, which is absolutely gorgeous and a tiny taste of heaven.
